The Bach Dang Bridge, a marvel of Vietnamese engineering.

Construction began in 2014 and was completed in 2018, the Hai Phong – Ha Long Expressway is considered Vietnam’s most expensive highway, spanning less than 25km but costing over 13.7 trillion VND, equivalent to 557 billion VND per kilometer.

The Hai Phong – Ha Long Expressway consists of two main components. The Ha Long – Bach Dang Bridge section, 19.3km long, had a total investment of over 6.4 trillion VND, funded by the state budget. The Bach Dang Bridge and its connecting roads, totaling 5.3km, were financed through a BOT model, with a total investment of nearly 7.3 trillion VND. The Bach Dang Bridge stands as the most prominent and critical part of the entire project.

With a total length of over 3km, the Bach Dang Bridge features a permanent structure made of prestressed reinforced concrete, a 250m wide navigation clearance, and a height of 48.8m. It can withstand earthquakes up to level 8. The bridge’s design includes three H-shaped towers, with the central tower standing at 99.7m and the two side towers at 94.5m. It incorporates four continuous cable-stayed spans, with a total cable weight exceeding 800 tons, consisting of 144 cable bundles, each containing 31 to 85 strands.

This design ranks the Bach Dang Bridge as the third among the world’s top seven cable-stayed bridges with the most spans. It is Vietnam’s most complex cable-stayed bridge, featuring four continuous spans. However, due to height restrictions, the cable inclination is minimal, requiring more intricate construction techniques compared to other cable-stayed bridges.

The Bach Dang Bridge ranks third among the world’s top seven cable-stayed bridges with the most spans.

Notably, the entire project was designed and constructed by Vietnamese engineers, led by Trung Nam E&C.

Trung Nam Construction and Installation Joint Stock Company (Trung Nam E&C) was established on May 23, 2008, as part of the Trung Nam Group ecosystem founded by Nguyen Tam Thinh.

Since its inception in 2008, Trung Nam E&C has won 61 contracts with a total value of nearly 47 trillion VND. Notable projects include the Ho Chi Minh City Tidal Flood Control Project (6.564 trillion VND), two packages at the Bach Dang Bridge in Hai Phong (1.490 trillion VND), the Ninh Thuan Wind Power Plant (1.289 trillion VND), and several major highway projects such as Mai Son – QL45, My Thuan 2, Bien Hoa – Vung Tau, and Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang.

Recently, the company has been part of a consortium that won a nearly 6 trillion VND contract to build the Thuong Cat Bridge and its connecting roads, part of the Hanoi Ring Road 3.5 project, a key infrastructure initiative in the capital.

The springboard for Trung Nam E&C’s rise was Da Nang, where the company undertook several key infrastructure projects between 2011 and 2013, including the extended Nguyen Tat Thanh Road (954 billion VND), the Hoa Lien Residential Area (nearly 200 billion VND), and notably the Hue Intersection Overpass (484 billion VND), an iconic landmark of the city.

As the main construction contractor for Trung Nam Group, Trung Nam E&C recorded a record revenue of over 19 trillion VND in 2021 before entering an adjustment phase. Revenue declined to 6.9 trillion VND in 2022, 4.1 trillion VND in 2023, and 2.5 trillion VND in 2024. On average, from 2020 to 2024, construction revenue stood at 8.5 trillion VND per year.

At its founding, Trung Nam E&C had a charter capital of 100 billion VND, with shareholders including Trung Nam Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (98.1 billion VND), Van Tan Private Enterprise (500 million VND), Nguyen Phan Sophie, and Tran Thi Thu Ngan (each contributing 700 million VND).

In 2015, Trung Nam E&C increased its charter capital from 100 billion VND to 150 billion VND, with Trung Nam Group maintaining control at 147.9 billion VND, while Van Tan Private Enterprise withdrew its investment.

Two years later, in September 2017, the company expanded its operations to include electrical system installation and raised its charter capital to over 30 billion VND. At this point, Nguyen Tam Thinh, Chairman of Trung Nam Group, became a major shareholder with a contribution of 211.9 billion VND, marking a significant transformation for Trung Nam E&C within the Trung Nam Group ecosystem.

Notably, as of October 2017, the company had only three registered employees.

After several capital increases, by early 2025, the company raised its charter capital to over 360 billion VND, with Le Thi Huyen (born in 1984) as Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and Bui Manh Hung (born in 1978) as Director. On January 20, 2025, the company updated its legal representative to Huynh Giap Nhan, CEO, while Bui Manh Hung assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors.
