Electric Motorcycles Sales Surge in Vietnam
Electric Motorcycle Sales Skyrocket
Vietnam’s two-wheeler market is witnessing a significant shift: gasoline motorcycle sales are declining, while electric motorcycles are experiencing a sharp rise in both sales volume and market share.
A report reveals that the total sales of the five major members of the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, Suzuki, SYM) in Q3/2025 reached 621,732 units, a 9.37% decrease compared to the same period last year, reflecting the downturn in the gasoline motorcycle segment.
Honda, the market leader, reported a 11.4% sales drop in September compared to the same period last year, with 163,787 units sold in the month.

Gasoline Motorcycle Sales Decline.
Conversely, electric motorcycles are booming with substantial growth.
According to aggregated data for the first half and the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam has emerged as the third-largest global consumer of electric motorcycles, with over 209,000 units sold in the first half of the year. Domestically, VinFast reported a nearly 450% increase in sales for the first eight months compared to the same period last year, positioning itself as the leader in the domestic electric two-wheeler segment.
Light electric motorcycles (L1, equivalent to under 50cc) and L3 models (over 50cc) saw robust growth, with increases of nearly 89% and 197% respectively compared to the same period. Overall, the industry’s total sales in 2024 reached approximately 2.9 million units and continued to grow in 2025; cumulative sales as of August 2025 reached about 2.08 million units, a 15.2% increase year-on-year.

Electric Motorcycle Sales Surge.
These figures indicate a consumer shift towards electric motorcycles, while cost-of-living pressures, inflation, and anticipation of regulatory policies (such as restrictions on gasoline vehicles in urban areas) contribute to the decline in gasoline motorcycle sales.
Balancing Gasoline and Electric Motorcycles
According to international media, the Vietnamese government and some Japanese businesses have expressed concerns about the directive banning fossil fuel motorcycles in Hanoi’s inner city from mid-2026, with further restrictions planned in subsequent years.
Feedback suggests that these restrictions could impact employment in supporting industries, including dealerships, component suppliers, and other auxiliary businesses. Some foreign companies with factories in Vietnam have warned of potential production disruptions and negative effects on thousands of dealerships and suppliers in the supply chain.
Stakeholders recommend a phased transition plan with adequate preparation time and minimum adjustment periods for production, infrastructure expansion, and safety standards.

Honda Vietnam has also assembled the ICON e: electric motorcycle model at its factory in Vinh Phuc (now part of Phu Tho).
However, some argue that the market operates like a balance: as electric motorcycles advance, gasoline motorcycles face declining pressure. The decline in gasoline motorcycles does not necessarily mean that associated industries will also decline.
If the growth trend in electric motorcycles is sustainable, supporting units can consider transitioning their models to adapt to the new landscape by serving the electric vehicle sector.

In reality, some domestic companies have proactively enhanced their capabilities in the electric motorcycle segment to meet new demands.
A notable example is VinFast’s recent announcement of a large-scale recruitment and training program for over 3,000 technicians, including 2,000 electric car technicians and 1,200 electric motorcycle technicians.
Vietnam’s leading automaker’s program includes intensive training, tuition support, living expenses, and post-training job placement. These efforts aim to ensure a skilled workforce for electric vehicles, which are becoming increasingly popular in Vietnam.
