Recently, the online community has been abuzz with reports of some iPhone 17 Pro Max models in orange mysteriously turning pink, resembling the rose gold variant.

On Reddit, a user shared an image of their iPhone 17 Pro in orange, showcasing a noticeable color change. Similarly, a TikTok video captured an iPhone 17 Pro transforming in color around the camera module and edges. While these cases remain rare, they’ve garnered significant attention on social media.

According to an analysis by 9to5Mac, the likely cause is exposure to cleaning agents containing hydrogen peroxide.

Reddit user @DakAttack316 shared their iPhone 17 Pro Max in Orange, which turned rose gold after prolonged use.

Hydrogen peroxide, commonly known as oxy già, is a colorless liquid with strong oxidizing properties. It’s widely used for bleaching, disinfecting, and cleaning in medical, household, and industrial settings.

The iPhone 17 Pro’s aluminum frame features an anodized finish, creating an artificial oxide layer to resist corrosion and maintain color consistency. However, hydrogen peroxide’s potent oxidizing nature can degrade this layer upon repeated or prolonged exposure.

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used to disinfect and clean wounds.

Consequently, the aluminum surface undergoes mild corrosion, leading to localized discoloration, particularly around the edges and camera module, while the rear glass remains unaffected.

Apple’s support page emphasizes: “Avoid products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Keep moisture away from openings, and never submerge your iPhone in cleaning agents. After disinfecting, wipe with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

Apple recommends cleaning devices with 70% isopropyl alcohol, 75% ethyl alcohol, or Clorox disinfecting wipes for gently wiping the iPhone’s exterior. Notably, these cleaning agents should not be used on Apple Vision Pro, as they may damage the device.

If you regularly use cleaning solutions for your iPhone, carefully check their ingredients. Steer clear of products containing hydrogen peroxide or bleach, as advised by Apple.
