Vietnam is advancing the construction of Long Thanh International Airport with the ambitious goal of not only establishing it as a regional aviation hub but also positioning it among the world’s largest airports.
The UK’s Daily Mail has hailed Long Thanh as poised to become “one of the world’s largest airports,” rivaling global aviation giants like Dubai and Dallas.
According to the report, the project is backed by an investment of approximately £9.5 billion (roughly $16 billion) and spans an area of around 5,000 hectares. The initial phase will feature three passenger terminals and four runways, with a projected capacity of 100 million passengers annually upon completion. The first phase targets 25 million passengers.
Additionally, international sources such as Travel & Tour World highlight: “Vietnam is constructing Long Thanh Airport to elevate the nation into the league of global aviation hubs capable of handling 100 million passengers annually.”
A report by the UK-based aviation analytics firm OAG previously noted that Long Thanh International Airport is being developed to serve 100 million passengers yearly through four terminals and runways. It emphasizes that the airport will alleviate the strain on the overburdened Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
Long Thanh Airport is a flagship national project, envisioned to become a cutting-edge aviation gateway that enhances Vietnam’s international transit capabilities.
Located in Long Thanh commune, Dong Nai province, approximately 40 km east of Ho Chi Minh City, the airport’s strategic position aims to share operational pressure with the overloaded Tan Son Nhat Airport while meeting the surging demand for passenger and cargo transport.
Phase 1 of the Long Thanh Airport project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, with operations commencing in mid-2026. Current connections to Ho Chi Minh City are primarily via the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway and National Highway 51 – 1 – Hanoi Highway. Future plans include a metro link to the city.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has submitted a detailed proposal to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha regarding the development of a rail link connecting Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports. This initiative aims to enhance transportation efficiency and reduce travel time between the two major aviation hubs in the region.
