On October 25, the Kinshasa City Authority in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Vingroup Joint Stock Company (Vingroup) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the research and development of large-scale urban and green transportation projects.

Under this agreement, both parties will jointly research and develop a mega-urban riverside project spanning approximately 6,300 hectares, convert over 300,000 gasoline vehicles to electric vehicles, and establish an electric bus system along with charging infrastructure.

The mega-urban project is part of Kinshasa’s expansion plan, located between the southern bank of the Congo River and the northern area of N’djili International Airport. It will include residential areas, villas, apartments, hospitals, schools, shopping centers, hotels, entertainment zones, and future government offices.

The project aims to develop a modern urban center, enhance the quality of life, transform the city’s landscape, and become a new tourism destination and development symbol for Kinshasa. Notably, Congo has granted Vingroup free land to implement the project.

Additionally, Congo and Vingroup will expand their collaboration in green transportation projects, including the development of electric bus and taxi systems, as well as charging stations operated by VinFast and GSM.

Specifically, Vingroup will provide VinFast electric buses and support the construction and operation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. VinFast will supply suitable vehicle models and gradually replace over 300,000 fossil fuel vehicles in Kinshasa with electric ones.

Kinshasa has committed to providing land for the construction of charging infrastructure to accelerate the city’s green transition.

Ms. Lê Thị Thu Thủy, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup, expressed the group’s enthusiasm for partnering with Kinshasa City Authority to improve residents’ quality of life. With extensive experience in developing world-class mega-urban projects and building electrified transportation networks, Vingroup is confident in contributing to Kinshasa’s urban transformation and sustainable development in Congo.

Kinshasa, the capital and largest city of Congo, has a population of approximately 17 million people.
