Vietnam’s First Female Deputy Prime Minister Captivates International Media

On October 25th, during the 10th session of the National Assembly, a resolution was passed approving the Prime Minister’s nomination of Ms. Phạm Thị Thanh Trà as Deputy Prime Minister for the 2021-2026 term. Formerly the Minister of Home Affairs, Ms. Trà’s appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes Vietnam’s first female Deputy Prime Minister.

Highlighting this significant event, the UK-based news agency Reuters reported that Vietnam’s National Assembly confirmed the appointment of two Deputy Prime Ministers and three new Ministers.

“The additional Deputy Prime Ministers include former Minister of Home Affairs Phạm Thị Thanh Trà and former Gia Lai Provincial Party Secretary Hồ Quốc Dũng. These appointments bring the total number of Deputy Prime Ministers in the government to nine,” Reuters stated.

Additionally, Reuters noted the National Assembly’s approval of new Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, and Agriculture and Environment.

According to Reuters, the National Assembly commenced its final session of the 15th term on Monday, October 20th, scheduled to conclude on December 11th.

Russia’s TASS news agency also reported: “Vietnam’s National Assembly approved the appointment of Ms. Phạm Thị Thanh Trà, former Minister of Home Affairs, as Deputy Prime Minister. The confirmation vote took place during the 10th session, the final session of the 15th National Assembly term, currently underway in Hanoi.”

China’s Sina emphasized: “Public records indicate that Ms. Phạm Thị Thanh Trà was born in January 1964 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in June 1993. She is a member of the 12th and 13th Central Committees of the Communist Party of Vietnam.”

Caliber.az highlighted Ms. Trà’s career: “At 61, Ms. Phạm Thị Thanh Trà becomes the first woman to hold the position of Deputy Prime Minister in Vietnam.

She began her career as a teacher and later held leadership roles in Yên Bái, including Chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Committee and Party Secretary. She was appointed Minister of Home Affairs in April 2021, a position she held until her recent promotion.”

Azerbaijan’s report.az confirmed the appointment of Minister of Home Affairs Phạm Thị Thanh Trà and Gia Lai Provincial Party Secretary Hồ Quốc Dũng as Deputy Prime Ministers for the 2021-2026 term.

“The resolution was adopted during a closed session on October 25th, based on the proposal by Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính. Of the 430 National Assembly delegates participating in the vote (90.72% of the total), 429 approved, with one delegate abstaining,” report.az noted.

Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Thị Thanh Trà, born in 1964 in Nghệ An Province, holds a Master’s degree in Educational Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Literature, along with advanced political theory qualifications.

She is a member of the 12th and 13th Central Committees of the Communist Party of Vietnam and a delegate of the 15th National Assembly.

During her extensive tenure in Yên Bái Province, Ms. Trà held various positions, including Vice Director of the Department of Education and Training in Trấn Yên District, Vice Chairwoman of the Trấn Yên District People’s Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Deputy Party Secretary, Chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Party Secretary, and Chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Council.

In October 2020, she was appointed Deputy Head of the Central Organization Commission and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

From April 2021, she served as Minister of Home Affairs.

On October 25, 2025, the National Assembly approved her appointment as Deputy Prime Minister for the 2021-2026 term, making her Vietnam’s first female Deputy Prime Minister.
