Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Dong Nai Province are set to jointly develop three key bridge projects: Cat Lai, Dong Nai 2, and Phu My 2. Among these, the Phu My 2 Bridge stands out as the most ambitious, with an estimated investment of USD 930 million. This project will establish a strategic transportation axis connecting the southern part of HCMC to the Long Thanh International Airport, a USD 16 billion venture.

HCMC’s First Double-Deck Bridge and Road System

According to the plan, the Phu My 2 Bridge will span approximately 10.4 miles, featuring 6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motorized traffic. The section crossing the Dong Nai River alone will stretch over 1.9 miles. The route begins at Nguyen Huu Tho Street (District 7), passes through Hoang Quoc Viet and Dao Tri, connects to the Lien Cang axis, and concludes at Road 25C (Nhon Trach District, Dong Nai).

A highlight of the project is the double-deck bridge and road design, a first for HCMC. This innovative approach maximizes urban space, reduces land clearance requirements, and effectively resolves long-standing congestion issues along the Hoang Quoc Viet axis.

The project is divided into three components:

Section Length / Scope Investment Model Estimated Capital
Nguyen Huu Tho – Phu My 2 ~1.9 miles HCMC Budget ~USD 45 million
Main Bridge over Dong Nai River ~1.9 miles PPP (BT Contract, Land Fund Payment) ~USD 430 million
Nha Be to 25C (Dong Nai) ~6.2 miles Dong Nai Budget ~USD 110 million

In August, Masterise Group expressed interest in researching and investing in the project, leveraging its experience in developing large-scale real estate complexes in HCMC.

The project is also part of HCMC’s 10 high-speed transportation axes for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050. It plays a crucial role in enhancing logistics, trade, services, and urban development in the southern region.

Currently, HCMC is collaborating with Dong Nai’s departments to finalize investment plans and funding. If approved on schedule, the project is expected to be submitted for approval in Q4/2025 and commence construction in 2027.

A Regional Connector Driving Southern Growth

The Phu My 2 Bridge is a vital link connecting southern HCMC, Nhon Trach, and Long Thanh Airport, offering a seamless alternative to the overburdened Phu My 1 Bridge. This route reduces travel time from Phu My Hung to Long Thanh Airport to just 30–35 minutes, enhancing connectivity between urban areas, seaports, and airports.

As HCMC’s first double-deck road project, Phu My 2 sets a precedent for multi-tiered transportation infrastructure, similar to major cities like Bangkok, Seoul, and Singapore. The additional upper deck:

  • Optimizes scarce land resources
  • Minimizes land clearance needs
  • Reduces negative impacts on existing residents
  • Establishes new standards for modern urban infrastructure

This bridge-road system will catalyze development along the Nguyen Huu Tho – Hoang Quoc Viet – Nhon Trach corridor, fostering new commercial hubs, logistics centers, and residential areas. Notably, Nhon Trach will become more accessible to HCMC, shortening travel times and attracting stronger investment.

The Phu My 2 Bridge will complete the logistics corridor linking Hiep Phuoc Port ↔ Nhon Trach Logistics ↔ Long Thanh Airport, creating a multimodal transport axis from seaports to highways and airports. This will lower logistics costs, boost competitiveness, and attract more FDI to industrial zones along the route.

  • Strengthen the satellite city model
  • Ease pressure on the inner city
  • Foster new growth poles beyond the existing core

Beyond its role as a transportation project, the Phu My 2 Bridge serves as a strategic catalyst for reorganizing HCMC’s urban space, enhancing logistics capacity, stimulating inter-regional economic growth, supporting Long Thanh Airport, and pioneering new infrastructure models for Vietnamese cities.
