Billion-Dollar Project Boosts Economic Development

The Can Gio Coastal Urban Area Project in Ho Chi Minh City, spanning 2,870 hectares with an investment of over $10 billion, is underway. This mega-project is a powerful catalyst, transforming the lives of thousands in the region.

Mr. Minh Tri, a resident of Can Gio, shares that he earns a living through fishing and seafood harvesting. However, income is unstable due to weather dependency. With the project’s launch, many locals now work on-site, earning a stable $390–$420 monthly. Businesses are thriving, attracting more customers than ever.

“Importantly, the project doesn’t disrupt fishing activities while creating jobs and improving local livelihoods,” Mr. Tri notes.

Ms. Do Ngoc Huong mentions that many locals previously working in HCMC’s center now return to Can Gio for nursery or project-related jobs. Others open homestays, restaurants, or rental services.

“Seeing Can Gio flourish brings me joy. Previously, poor infrastructure limited tourism and growth. Now, the vibrancy is inspiring,” Ms. Huong says.

Ms. Vo Thi Diem Phuong, Deputy Chair of Can Gio Commune, highlights the focus on sustainable tourism and maritime economy. The project creates jobs, boosts trade, and enhances livelihoods.

“Can Gio is rapidly transforming. With improved infrastructure, residents will soon reap the project’s benefits,” Ms. Phuong states.

Infrastructure: The Lifeline of Development

Beyond the coastal urban area, Can Gio benefits from major transport projects. Vingroup proposes a 350 km/h metro line, reducing travel to HCMC’s center to 12 minutes, and a sea-crossing route to Vung Tau, cutting travel time to 10 minutes.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Hang notes that infrastructure drives real estate growth, attracting residents and businesses. With world-class amenities and hotels, Can Gio is set to become a premier destination.

From Wilderness to Bustling Urban Hub
