As the only locality in Vietnam sharing both land and sea borders with China, Quang Ninh holds a unique position in fostering cooperative development with neighboring regions.
In the tourism sector—a key economic pillar—Quang Ninh identifies China as a strategic market of paramount importance.
Among Chinese provinces, Guangxi stands out as a particularly close and vital market for Quang Ninh.
To enhance connectivity, the Provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has consistently launched large-scale international cooperation programs. In 2025, the province welcomed numerous delegations from Guangxi, notably from Chongzuo City, while sending missions to Nanning and Fangchenggang to promote tourism routes via the Hoanh Mo – Dong Zhong and Bac Phong Sinh – Li Hua border gates. These efforts have fueled robust growth in both tourist numbers and cooperation scale.
Chinese tourists visiting Quang Ninh
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Chinese tourists accounted for 40% of international visitors to Quang Ninh, equivalent to one-quarter of all Chinese tourists to Vietnam.
Notably, over the past five years, the number of Chinese tourists staying in Quang Ninh has surged by an average of 126.5% annually, underscoring the destination’s strong appeal. The Mong Cai border gate alone now welcomes approximately 300,000 Chinese visitors yearly.
Additionally, the Beihai – Ha Long sea route resumed operations in November 2024 after a decade-long hiatus, marking a new milestone in Vietnam-China maritime tourism cooperation.
During the 2025 – 2026 cruise season, Quang Ninh anticipates nine Beihai – Ha Long voyages, with the inaugural trip carrying over 1,000 Chinese tourists arriving in November.
For the 2025 autumn-winter tourism season, the luxury cruise system in Ha Long Bay has been further invested in and refreshed, introducing unique hospitality experiences available from early October. From now until year-end, Quang Ninh expects around 40 cruise ship arrivals, including six in October alone. These include luxury vessels that have frequented Ha Long for years, such as Viking Orion, Silver Muse, Celebrity Solstice, and Silver Whisper.
Furthermore, starting November 1, 2025, Van Don International Airport will operate charter flights connecting Shenzhen and Van Don, opening new avenues for trade and tourism between the two regions.
Cruise tourism is one of the province’s strengths
In the first nine months of 2025, Quang Ninh welcomed 17.11 million visitors, achieving over 85% of its annual target and a 9% increase year-on-year. International arrivals reached 3.25 million, up 25%. Total tourism revenue hit approximately VND 44,250 billion.
By year-end 2025, Quang Ninh projects 350,000 – 400,000 Chinese visitors, including groups of up to 2,000. To further attract this market, the province has partnered with tourism businesses on both sides to develop new products, expanding tours beyond central Ha Long to areas like Cam Pha, Quang Hanh, and Thong Nhat, featuring hot mineral baths, eco-tourism, and artistic performances.
These impressive figures and developments confirm that Quang Ninh’s tourism is entering a boom phase, with triple-digit growth rates and China remaining the cornerstone of its sustainable development and international integration strategy.
