From November 3rd onwards, Vietnam Airlines will implement charges for carry-on baggage exceeding current weight and size regulations.

Specifically, carry-on baggage exceeding the maximum weight limit by up to 10 kg or surpassing the allowance of one piece (maximum 10 kg) will incur a fee equivalent to one checked baggage at the airport, depending on the route.

Carry-on baggage must not exceed the specified weight and size limits.

In cases where baggage exceeds standard dimensions but is still accepted for transport, the fee will be equivalent to one oversized checked baggage at the airport. If baggage exceeds both weight and size limits, passengers will be charged a fee equivalent to one bulky checked baggage.

According to the airline, the new regulations aim to ensure operational safety, balance cargo hold weight, and enhance the passenger experience on Vietnam Airlines flights.

The regulations vary depending on domestic or international flights, ticket issuance dates, and fare classes.

As per Vietnam Airlines’ carry-on baggage policy, for domestic flights within Vietnam (applicable to tickets issued/exchanged before May 5, 2025): Business Class: Total carry-on baggage weight must not exceed 18 kg; passengers are allowed 2 pieces of baggage (each not exceeding 10 kg) and 1 accessory.

Premium Economy/Economy Class: Total carry-on baggage weight must not exceed 12 kg, with passengers allowed 1 piece of baggage (not exceeding 10 kg) and 1 accessory.

For tickets issued/exchanged on or after May 5, 2025, for flights to/from the USA, Europe (including Russia), and Australia, Business/Premium Economy Class: Total carry-on baggage weight must not exceed 18 kg. Passengers are allowed 2 pieces of baggage (each not exceeding 10 kg) and 1 accessory.

For Economy Class: Total carry-on baggage weight must not exceed 12 kg. Passengers are allowed 1 piece of baggage (not exceeding 10 kg) and 1 accessory.

For other itineraries, Business Class: Total carry-on baggage weight must not exceed 18 kg. Passengers are allowed 2 pieces of baggage and 1 accessory.

Premium Economy/Economy Class: Passengers are allowed 1 piece of baggage (maximum 10 kg) and 1 accessory. Total weight must not exceed 10 kg.

Carry-on baggage for children is regulated as follows: Children under 2 years old are allowed 1 piece of baggage not exceeding 3 kg (including food and diapers) and 1 foldable stroller/bassinet that fits in the baggage compartment. Children aged 2 and above are allowed 1 foldable stroller that fits in the baggage compartment. If the baggage compartment is full, strollers/bassinets meeting the above carry-on standards will be transported as checked baggage (free of charge).

Carry-on baggage dimensions: Maximum dimensions for 3 sides (length × width × height) must be:

For 1 piece of baggage: 56 cm × 36 cm × 23 cm, total < 115 cm. For 1 accessory: 40 cm × 30 cm × 15 cm, total < 85 cm.

Note: For itineraries operated entirely by Vietnam Airlines: In addition to the above free carry-on baggage allowance, passengers may bring personal items for use on the plane.

Carry-on baggage exceeding the specified quantity, weight, or size limits must be checked. On certain flights, even if baggage meets the standards, the airline may require it to be checked (free of charge) if the aircraft’s baggage compartment is limited.

For flights operated by ATR72 aircraft: Carry-on baggage allowance is 7 kg, and checked baggage is 1 piece (23 kg).

For itineraries operated by other airlines: Passengers should review the carry-on baggage regulations of the operating airline.
