Beyond the Golden Age: Motorcycle Dealerships Struggle to Sell Each Bike

Motorcycle prices are dropping across the board, with dealerships slashing up to 5 million VND off select models. Despite these enticing discounts and additional promotions, consumer demand remains sluggish.

Vietnam’s domestic motorcycle market is experiencing a significant price drop since the beginning of Q4, with major brands like Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, SYM, and Piaggio slashing prices and offering attractive promotions or registration fee support.

A survey at several Honda dealerships in Ho Chi Minh City reveals that the SH 160 and SH 125 models have seen a price reduction of approximately VND 2 million compared to two weeks ago, now priced at VND 105 million and VND 73.5 million, respectively. The SH Mode has also dropped by VND 1.5 million, ranging from VND 56 to 63 million depending on the version. Popular models like the Air Blade 160 and Vision have further decreased by VND 1 million, now selling at VND 57 million and VND 30 million, respectively.

Yamaha has joined the price war, offering a discount of up to VND 15 million on the Neo’s electric scooter, while the Janus model has seen a VND 2 million reduction. Similarly, Piaggio dealerships have adjusted prices across various models, with discounts ranging from VND 2.8 to 3.2 million.

Many retailers attribute these consecutive price cuts not only to boosting sales but also to clearing inventory for the launch of new-generation models expected in early 2026.

However, weak consumer demand persists, putting pressure on dealerships to meet sales targets and manage inventory costs. Industry players hope that the upcoming year-end shopping season and consumer stimulus packages will revive the motorcycle market, ending the prolonged slump since the beginning of the year.

Sparse customer traffic at a motorcycle showroom

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, owner of Ha Thanh motorcycle shop in Ho Chi Minh City, sales plummeted two months ago due to the “ghost month” superstition. Despite the superstitious period ending, customer footfall remains low, with the situation still bleak in the ninth lunar month. “Many consumers remain cautious about spending, even with substantial price cuts. Dealerships are offering numerous incentives, but customer turnout is minimal,” Mr. Tung shared.

Dealers attribute the market’s sluggishness to consumers’ unrecovered income after prolonged hardships and tightened spending. High inventory levels and continuous sales decline since the year’s beginning have forced distributors to launch aggressive promotions to stimulate demand.

Mr. Tung predicts that the price reduction trend may continue until year-end to clear inventory and maintain market share, reflecting the intensifying competition in the market.
