Iconic Long Biên Bridge Enclosed, Traffic Restricted for Major Restoration

The iconic Long Biên Bridge, a 120-year-old symbol of Hanoi’s capital, is undergoing restoration and repair. The construction team has erected protective barriers along the bridge’s structure and mobilized workers and equipment to commence the project.

The construction of Long Biên Bridge is part of the periodic maintenance project for Trần Nhật Duật Bridge at Km2+215 on the Hanoi – Đồng Đăng railway line. The project is scheduled from October 27 to December 31.

Our reporter observed dozens of workers along with specialized equipment and materials engaged in the repair and restoration of the over 120-year-old bridge.

Long Biên Bridge, spanning the Red River, was designed by the French and began construction in 1898, completed in 1902, originally named Doumer Bridge. It is the oldest steel bridge in Vietnam, with a total length of 2,990 meters and an 896-meter approach, and was once the largest bridge in Southeast Asia upon its completion.
