The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) announced that on October 30, the rigorous flight calibration and safety certification process was successfully completed, marking a significant milestone in the preparation for the commercial operation of Long Thanh International Airport.
According to VATM, this critical phase not only ensures technical compliance but also holds substantial legal importance, paving the way for the final acceptance of the project. It underscores the expertise and seamless collaboration among Vietnam’s aviation entities as they integrate into the global aviation network.
From September 26 to October 29, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), Air Traffic Management Technical Company (ATTECH), and VATM jointly conducted flight checks and calibrations using DGPS equipment and a King Air B350 aircraft, adhering to ICAO standards. These tests evaluated the precision, safety, and reliability of Long Thanh Airport’s navigation systems.
Simultaneously, teams inspected the PSR/SSR radar systems, ADS-B surveillance, and the operational capabilities of both ends of runway 05R/23L, simulating real-world operations of a major international airport.
Experts from the Czech Republic’s Air Navigation Academy participated in the assessments, confirming that all radar and ADS-B technical parameters met or exceeded ICAO and European standards. The experts commended Vietnam’s professionalism, openness to feedback, and technical proficiency, aligning with international operational benchmarks.
Throughout the process, Southern Air Traffic Management, the Air Traffic Flow Management Center, Aeronautical Information Services, Aeronautical Meteorology, the Long Thanh Project Management Board, and Air Force Division 370 collaborated closely to ensure flight safety, security, and emergency response readiness.
All equipment, personnel, and operational plans were fully activated to maintain absolute safety within the Ho Chi Minh City Flight Information Region (FIR), one of the busiest airspaces in the region.
The completion of these calibration flights is a historic achievement for Vietnam’s aviation sector, demonstrating unwavering commitment and professionalism. It brings Long Thanh Airport closer to its scheduled commercial launch in 2026.
As the trial flights conclude, the door opens to a modern regional aviation hub, enhancing Vietnam’s standing on the global aviation map.
The successful completion of flight calibration marks a historic milestone for Vietnam’s aviation industry, propelling Long Thanh Airport toward its commercial debut in 2026.
Located in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province, Long Thanh International Airport spans nearly 5,000 hectares with a total investment of $16 billion (over 336.6 trillion VND).
Designed to handle 100 million passengers and 25 million tons of cargo annually, it will be Vietnam’s largest and most technologically advanced airport upon completion.
Notably, Long Thanh Airport meets the ICAO’s highest 4F standards, enabling it to accommodate the world’s largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8.
As directed by the Prime Minister, the project remains on track for substantial completion by December 19, 2025. Long Thanh Airport has set a record with eight visits from the Prime Minister in three years, the most recent on August 2.
