Honda Vietnam (HVN) has announced plans to commence local assembly of the CR-V e:HEV model at its Phu Tho plant starting in early 2026. This marks the first time the hybrid variant of this SUV will be produced domestically, rather than being fully imported as is currently the case.

According to Honda, the localization of the CR-V e:HEV is part of its strategy to expand production and shift towards environmentally friendly vehicle lines. This move is seen as an effort by the company to align with the ongoing trend of vehicle electrification in Vietnam and globally.

Amidst a market shift towards fuel-efficient vehicles, Honda has been a pioneer in introducing hybrid technology in Vietnam. Since 2023, the company has launched the Civic e:HEV, HR-V e:HEV, and CR-V e:HEV models across different segments, broadening consumer choices.

Honda’s e:HEV technology employs a powertrain combining a gasoline engine with two electric motors, enabling the vehicle to operate in various modes depending on traffic conditions. This system delivers approximately 30% better fuel efficiency compared to conventional gasoline engines. Additionally, hybrid models are considered a practical intermediate solution as Vietnam gradually transitions to electric vehicles, offering environmental benefits without relying on limited charging infrastructure.

In Vietnam, the Honda CR-V is one of the best-selling mid-size SUVs. The introduction of a hybrid variant and local assembly could enhance the brand’s price competitiveness and reduce delivery times for customers.

Honda stated that local production of the CR-V e:HEV will provide greater supply chain control, meeting the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. It is also expected to contribute to the development of the domestic automotive industry by increasing the localization rate of components in the future.

The CR-V e:HEV has received high praise for its performance and fuel efficiency, earning accolades such as the “Best Family Car” (Better Choice Awards 2024) and “Hybrid of the Year” 2025. In September, 273 units were sold, bringing the total sales for the year to 1,558 vehicles.

HVN is repositioning its Phu Tho plant to not only assemble internal combustion engine vehicles but also produce hybrid electric models, aligning with Vietnam’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
