In September 2024, Critica Limited (Australia) made a groundbreaking discovery of high-grade magnetic rare earth oxide (MREO) concentrations at drill sites within their Brothers project.
Utilizing advanced regional drilling techniques, they identified extensive zones of “high-quality” rare earth mineralization, with MREO grades reaching up to 34%. These findings include valuable rare earth elements like dysprosium and terbium.
Dysprosium, prized for its high neutron absorption cross-section, is crucial in nuclear reactor control rods, laser materials, and phosphor activators. Terbium, on the other hand, is essential for producing green phosphors used in fluorescent lamps, computer monitors, and CRT televisions.
Both elements are vital components in neodymium-iron-boron magnets, indispensable for electric vehicle drivetrains.
Philippa Leggat, CEO of Critica Limited, highlighted the immense potential of the Brothers project, spanning nearly 1,400 km² under their ownership.
“This is the first time we’ve seen such consistently high target grades across such a broad drilling area. It’s truly exciting,” Leggat remarked.
As of September 2024, 64 drill holes have confirmed rare earth discoveries, with results pending for an additional 48 holes.
Strategically located in Western Australia’s premier mining region, the Brothers project benefits from proximity to the Mount Magnet-Geraldton Highway and the coastal port of Geraldton.
Critica is implementing cutting-edge mining methods for this project, prioritizing high-value rare earth extraction while minimizing environmental impact and processing costs.
