On November 5th, coastal communities in Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak provinces were in a state of high alert as they prepared for Typhoon Kalmaegi. Fishermen scrambled to secure their boats, relocate lobster farms from deep waters to the shore, and harvest market-ready lobsters before the storm’s arrival.

At Lo Sau area in My Thanh neighborhood, Xuan Dai ward, Dak Lak province, a long line of refrigerated trucks waited to purchase lobsters from local farmers. The buying and selling frenzy continued from dawn till dusk, everyone racing against time to minimize potential losses from the impending typhoon.

Mrs. Tran Thi My (47, from My Thanh neighborhood) shared that her family had 20 lobster cages ready for sale but hadn’t planned to harvest yet. “Upon hearing the typhoon warning, we had to sell them quickly, despite the price being lower than usual by 50,000 to 70,000 VND/kg. Previously, lobsters were sold for 810,000 – 820,000 VND/kg, but now they’re only fetching 750,000 – 770,000 VND/kg,” Mrs. My said.

Mrs. Huynh My Kieu, a long-time lobster farmer in My Thanh neighborhood, added, “Even though prices have dropped, leaving them behind could result in heavier losses if they suffocate or die during the storm. Post-typhoon, heavy rains and turbid water could also kill the lobsters. It’s better to sell now and salvage what we can.”

Traders have also intensified their lobster purchases in recent days. Some reported buying twice the usual volume, with some purchasing up to ten tons daily to meet demand. However, the rushed buying comes with challenges in transportation, preservation, and sorting.

According to the Dak Lak Fisheries Sub-Department, Xuan Dai Bay is known as the lobster capital, with 129,321 meat lobster cages and 395 nursery cages. Xuan Dai Ward’s data shows 537 rafts/27,000 lobster cages, employing around 1,500 workers. Since November 3rd, local authorities have advised farmers to implement safety measures and harvest early.

In Dai Lanh commune (Khanh Hoa province), residents are also rushing to harvest and sell high-value seafood like lobsters, seabass, and white snapper before the typhoon hits.

Mrs. Dinh Thi Hoi from Dam Mon village, who invested over 2.5 billion VND in 34 green lobster cages, sold half her stock proactively. “Green lobsters are now selling for 780,000 VND/kg, 40,000 VND less than before (previously 820,000 VND/kg),” she noted.

Dai Lanh commune has nearly 1,000 households engaged in aquaculture, with approximately 35,000 cages, primarily farming seabass, lobsters, and other high-value species.

Dak Lak Issues Sea Ban

On the morning of November 5th, the Chairman of Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee issued a sea ban to ensure the safety of people and vessels amid Typhoon No. 13.

The committee directed the chairpersons of 12 coastal communes and wards to prohibit boats from going out to sea and halt all fishing activities from 6:00 AM on November 5th.

The Border Guard Command, Department of Agriculture and Environment, and Fisheries Sub-Department were instructed to closely monitor weather conditions, inform fishermen when it’s safe to resume activities, and plan production to ensure safety.

Relevant agencies and coastal localities were tasked with disseminating information, guiding vessels to safe shelters, and ensuring no one remains on boats, rafts, or watchtowers.

The same day, Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee issued an urgent directive to implement response plans for Typhoon No. 13 and heavy rains, flooding.

Given the typhoon’s intensity, the Chairman emphasized strict adherence to previous directives, adopting a proactive approach, and preparing for the worst-case scenario.

Measures must be taken to ensure absolute safety for residents, minimize property damage, and avoid being caught off guard in any situation.
