Meeting in progress.

On the morning of November 3rd, the People’s Committee of Can Tho City held a meeting with businesses to discuss two renewable energy projects: a biomass power plant and a solar power plant. Sao Mai Group proposed the Sao Mai 1 Solar Power Plant, located in Xa Phien commune, Can Tho City. The project has a designed capacity of 50 MW, scheduled to operate from 2025 to 2030, with a total investment of approximately 1 trillion VND.

The project site was previously planned by the former Hau Giang Province during the 2021-2030 period. However, the province’s energy land use quota has been exhausted and is not included in the local land use plan. As a result, the project has not yet been approved by the People’s Council of Can Tho City. Investors have requested local authorities to address these issues.

The Can Tho Biomass Power Plant is planned for Vinh Trinh commune, covering over 24 hectares with a total investment exceeding 8 trillion VND. The plant will have a capacity of 150 MW, requiring over 709,600 tons of rice husk annually.

The biomass power plant will ensure stable output for approximately 100 rice milling companies, reduce CO2 emissions by over 565,500 tons annually, and efficiently utilize agricultural by-products. To manage risks, the plant will initially operate at 50 MW, expanding to 150 MW once operations stabilize and fuel supply is secured.

Business representatives urged the Can Tho People’s Committee to approve the project proposal, enabling updates to land use planning and related regional plans.

Mr. Vuong Quoc Nam, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, stated that the city is accelerating the integrated planning adjustments post-merger. He directed relevant departments to incorporate both power plant projects into the revised plan and requested investors to collaborate with these departments for subsequent steps.
