Hanoi Approves Planning Tasks for Olympic Sports Urban Area – Zone A

The Hanoi People’s Committee has issued Decision No. 5397/QĐ-UBND, approving the planning tasks for the Olympic Sports Urban Area – Zone A, at a scale of 1:2,000. This marks a significant step toward realizing the vision of developing Hanoi’s southern region into an international-class sports, tourism, and ecological hub.

The total area for the Olympic Sports Urban Area is approximately 16,081 hectares, with Zone A—the first phase—covering 3,280 hectares. The planning period extends until 2045, with a vision reaching 2065.

The approval of these planning tasks aligns with National Assembly Resolution No. 81 on the National Master Plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, and is consistent with the Hanoi Capital Master Plan for 2021–2030, approved by the Prime Minister.

This plan not only reflects the city’s long-term vision for expanding its urban space southward but also serves as a foundation for attracting investment, developing synchronized infrastructure, and creating new growth momentum for the region.

The Olympic Sports Urban Area is envisioned as a modern sports, tourism, and ecological complex, featuring an Olympic-standard sports complex, athlete villages, training centers, and a comprehensive system of accommodation, commerce, entertainment, cultural, and ecological landscape services.

The goal is to create a vibrant, green, and smart urban cluster that meets residents’ needs while being capable of hosting regional and international sporting events, such as the Asian Games or the Olympic Games, in the future.

A Strategic Turning Point in Hanoi’s Planning and Development

The implementation of the Olympic Sports Urban Area – Zone A is more than just an infrastructure project; it holds profound strategic, economic, social, and cultural significance for Hanoi’s future development.

First, it demonstrates a strategic vision in Hanoi’s urban spatial planning. Amid overcrowding and infrastructure strain in the city center, this large-scale southern urban area will help redistribute the population, alleviate traffic pressure, and promote sustainable urbanization. Located near Ring Road 4 and regional connectivity routes, it will emerge as a new growth pole, expanding Hanoi’s development southward.

Second, the project holds special significance for national sports and tourism development. Designed as a modern sports complex meeting international standards, it can host major events like the Asian Games (ASIAD) or the Olympic Games.

This will elevate Hanoi’s status on the global sports map while boosting sports tourism, event tourism, and related services, creating new economic momentum for the capital and the Red River Delta region.

Additionally, the project will have positive social impacts, generating jobs, improving local livelihoods, and fostering synchronized technical and social infrastructure development in southern Hanoi. Once operational, the Olympic Sports Urban Area will become a new symbol of modern, internationally integrated Hanoi, showcasing its commitment to building a dynamic, creative, and culturally rich city.
