The Sailun brand recently unveiled several new tire products for VinFast vehicles at a recent event. Images circulating on social media and automotive forums reveal that this lineup includes a brand-new hybrid model.

Sailun is one of VinFast’s largest partners, supplying original equipment tires for most of the automaker’s electric vehicle models. While the new tires don’t explicitly mention specific vehicle names, the teaser images feature a distinctive design with falcon-wing daytime running lights and a faint V-shaped logo, unmistakably identifying them as VinFast vehicles.

Sailun unveils new tire products for VinFast, including a brand-new hybrid model.

Initial images suggest the hybrid model’s front design closely resembles the current VF 8. Other new models teased through Sailun’s tire images include the Limo 7—rumored to be a premium Limo Green variant—along with the VF 6, VF 7, and VF 9, all built on a new platform. VinFast has yet to release any official information about these vehicles.

VinFast’s entry into the hybrid market is surprising, given the company’s announcement in July 2022 to discontinue gasoline-powered vehicles. Since then, VinFast has focused exclusively on electric vehicles, from motorcycles to cars, achieving notable success in the domestic market.

However, this move is seen as a strategic response to the rapid growth of hybrid vehicles in Vietnam, further fueled by the new special consumption tax policy set to take effect in 2026.

It remains unclear which hybrid category VinFast’s future models will fall under. The market currently offers various hybrid configurations, including mild hybrids (MHEV), self-charging hybrids (HEV), and plug-in hybrids (PHEV). Each type differs in how and to what extent electrification integrates into the vehicle’s operation.

Another hybrid variant, the range-extended electric vehicle (EREV), is less common in Vietnam. In this configuration, the gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to charge the battery, which powers the electric motor.

Given VinFast’s extensive nationwide charging network, a PHEV powertrain could be the most suitable choice for its first hybrid model. The affordable PHEV market in Vietnam remains largely untapped, with only a few Chinese models available, while MHEV and HEV segments are dominated by Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki.
