The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has recently announced the implementation plan for the investment project to construct the Metro Line No. 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong). According to the plan, key tasks include submitting and approving the project implementation plan, preparing and appraising the mid-term report of the feasibility study for the adjusted investment project, the adjusted environmental impact assessment report, the monitoring and evaluation report before project adjustment, and the final feasibility study report for the adjusted investment project. These tasks are scheduled to be completed between October and December this year.

Additionally, in November and December, the investor will initiate preparatory work, with the expected groundbreaking for the entire line on January 15, 2026, and simultaneous construction starting from January 16, 2026.

The City People’s Committee has also approved the application of the special mechanism under Resolution No. 188/2025/QH15, which exempts the project from re-approving the investment policy for Metro Line No. 2.

Furthermore, the committee has agreed to include the operational costs of experts involved in the appraisal process into the total investment of the project. The Urban Railway Management Board is tasked with preparing and submitting the necessary documents for appraisal and approval as per regulations.

The Ben Thanh – Tham Luong Metro Line spans over 11 km with 9 underground stations and one elevated station, at a total investment of nearly VND 47.9 trillion. The project passes through six districts (1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu), connecting the city center with the northwestern gateway. Approved in 2010, the project has faced multiple delays and is now expected to be completed by 2030.

Upon completion, the line will connect with Metro Line No. 1 at Ben Thanh Station (District 1) and, in the future, with Metro Lines No. 5, 3b, 4, and 6, facilitating seamless passenger transfer along the East-West axis into the city center.

Over the next decade, Ho Chi Minh City aims to construct an additional 355 km of metro lines. Currently, only Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), spanning nearly 20 km, is under construction and is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2024.
