Indonesian Expert: ‘Vingroup Exemplifies a Regional-Scale Transformation’

Dr. Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, a technology and public policy expert at Indonesia's Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), was profoundly inspired by his recent visit to Vietnam. Witnessing the nation's ambitious green transition efforts, he singled out Vingroup as a regional beacon of innovation. The Vietnamese conglomerate, he noted, exemplifies the transformative spirit driving Southeast Asia's sustainable future.

Pillars of the “Green Civilization”

“I am truly impressed by Vingroup’s vision and mission,” shared Dr. Yannes, a senior researcher at Indonesia’s National Center for Sustainable Transportation Technology.

According to him, in a short period, Vingroup has achieved what many could only dream of: building a vibrant ecosystem that combines innovation, ambition, and sustainable development. “This proves that with a clear vision and unwavering determination, a company can shape the future at a pace beyond imagination,” he stated.

From Dr. Yannes’ perspective, Vingroup is not just a diversified conglomerate but a symbol of a “regional transformation.”

As an experienced researcher in green transportation, Dr. Yannes believes VinFast’s greatest distinction from other car manufacturers is that the Vietnamese company hasn’t stopped at producing electric vehicles. He describes VinFast as the “heartbeat” of Vingroup’s comprehensive green transition, spanning clean energy, green infrastructure, and electrified transportation. “I believe this is not just an industrial strategy but a roadmap toward a green civilization,” he said.

More broadly, he notes that from battery production, pure electric vehicles, and renewable energy development to higher education and high-tech research, Vingroup is creating a “cross-sector” ecosystem that connects science, people, and the market.

According to him, Vingroup’s comprehensive vision not only builds industries but also constructs a future where technology, energy, and humanity develop in harmony. “I believe that in the near future, Vingroup will become one of the most important pillars in Southeast Asia in the field of green energy and industry,” he said.

“Southeast Asia, Why Not?”

For decades, the automotive markets in Indonesia and Southeast Asia have been dominated by major brands from Japan and South Korea. However, Dr. Yannes believes VinFast is opening a new era, posing a question of regional identity: “Southeast Asia, Why Not?”

The emergence of VinFast—the first ASEAN brand to go global in the electric vehicle industry—carries a powerful symbolic meaning: a “new Asia” with sufficient technological, financial, and human capabilities to compete on equal terms.

“VinFast can rise to become the ‘flagship’ of ASEAN—representing limitless creativity, confidence, and strategic vision, leading humanity into the green industrial era,” Dr. Yannes affirmed.

The VF 6 model is now available in Indonesia.

In Indonesia, VinFast is gaining widespread recognition, particularly through its “green taxis” using VinFast electric vehicles. This demonstrates the company’s consistent vision of making electric vehicles more accessible to everyone.

Beyond its scale, Dr. Yannes sees a strategic alignment between Vingroup and Indonesia. “The Indonesian government is promoting electric vehicles, clean energy, and Industry 4.0 workforce training. Vingroup perfectly aligns with this direction,” he observed.

If Japan Has Toyota, South Korea Has Hyundai, Then Southeast Asia Has VinFast

For Dr. Yannes, Vingroup’s story is not just the success of a Vietnamese conglomerate. “If Japan has Toyota, South Korea has Hyundai, then Southeast Asia can absolutely have VinFast,” he asserted.

“This is a statement that this region is not just a consumer of value, but also a creator, innovator, and shaper of value, proving that the future of the green industry can be written from this side of the world,” the expert added.

More broadly, according to Dr. Yannes, Southeast Asia is not just looking for an automobile manufacturer but an ecosystem capable of connecting energy, technology, and people. He believes Vingroup embodies a closed ecosystem, a comprehensive green vision, and a global ambition, and affirms that this integrated model will help ASEAN become a leader in the global green industrial era.

Specifically, in Indonesia, he highly appreciates Vingroup’s strategy in solar energy development, battery storage, and electrified transportation. “The ‘green island’ model—where renewable energy combines with electric vehicles—perfectly aligns with Indonesia’s sustainable development strategy.”

In fact, Vingroup has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian state-owned enterprise PT. Sulsel Andalan Energi in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, to cooperate in the field of renewable energy, focusing on large-scale solar power projects. According to the MoU, both parties also agree to jointly research, develop, and effectively exploit other business opportunities in the field of environmental sustainability.

Vingroup and PT. Sulsel Andalan Energi are also actively participating in comprehensive research and site surveys for suitable solar power projects on land or water, while integrating energy storage solutions and grid connection planning.

“After their first lifecycle, electric vehicle batteries can be reused as solar energy storage devices,” Dr. Yannes noted, “This will be a new billion-dollar industry, and I believe Vingroup has the vision, technology, and capability to lead it.”
