Coconuts, priced at just 7,000 to 8,000 VND per fruit, are impressively large, weighing around 1.2 to 1.3 kg each, with vibrant green exteriors. When cracked open, they reveal abundant sweet, refreshing water and tender, fragrant flesh.
“I often buy coconuts for drinking or cooking. Previously, they cost 15,000 to 20,000 VND each. These 7,000 VND ones are slightly smaller but still fresh and delicious. It’s been ages since I’ve seen coconuts this affordable,” shared Ms. Ngọc Ánh from Xa La Urban Area.
Deep discounts on coconuts at various markets and stalls.
Like Ms. Ánh, many families are stocking up on coconuts as a daily refreshing beverage. Vendors report frequent restocking to meet the surging demand.
Explaining the “unbelievable” prices, Mr. Hùng, a coconut vendor on Phạm Tu Street, noted that farm-gate prices in Bến Tre have plummeted recently.
“We source directly from Bến Tre in bulk containers, which keeps costs low. A truck arrives in Hanoi every 2-3 days,” Mr. Hùng explained.
Fresh Siamese coconuts sold by street vendors.
Mr. Hùng, a wholesaler who distributes across the city, retains only a small portion for retail. “Selling at 7,000 VND per coconut yields minimal profit, sometimes just 1,000 VND each. But low prices drive quick sales, preventing spoilage,” he said.
Siamese coconuts, being perishable, must be sold swiftly at lower prices. “Transport from Bến Tre takes 2-3 days. Any damage during transit causes rapid spoilage and souring. Prolonged storage significantly degrades quality, so we sell immediately upon arrival,” Mr. Hùng added.
Many buyers purchase coconuts for their affordability.
At Dịch Vọng Market (Cầu Giấy), a stall advertising “Siamese Coconuts – 8,000 VND Each, Buy 5 Get 1 Free” attracts a steady crowd. The vendor shared that they began selling coconuts only a month ago due to the low prices and high demand.
“Previously, these coconuts cost at least 15,000 VND each. Now, at half the price, sales are consistent. Some customers buy nearly 20 coconuts at a time for family consumption. Besides whole coconuts, we also sell coconut water in bottles at 40,000 VND per liter, allowing customers to choose their coconuts for immediate extraction,” the vendor said.
Coconuts are now a top-selling item at many stalls.
Vendors advise checking the stem to distinguish fresh from old coconuts. Fresh coconuts have vibrant stems, while older ones have withered, dry stems with dark spots. Siamese coconuts are categorized into three types: Type 1 (over 1.5 kg), Type 2 (1-1.2 kg), and Type 3 (0.8-1 kg). At just 7,000 to 10,000 VND per fruit, Siamese coconuts have become a “hot” item in Hanoi markets, praised for their affordability and quality, prompting traders to import them regularly.
Unbelievable Coconut Prices in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta
While fresh coconut prices in the Mekong Delta plummet due to a sharp decline in demand, dried coconut prices have surged, doubling compared to the same period last year.
