At 4:20 PM on November 14, 2025, Unit 2 (H10) of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project successfully synchronized with the national power grid. Earlier, at 11:12 AM on the same day, the AT2 transformer (T10) and the 500kV GIS distribution station (part of Unit 2) were successfully energized.

Overview of the plant.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, with a total capacity of 480MW, is invested by EVN, with the Electricity Project Management Unit 1 acting as the investor’s representative.

To ensure the project’s completion and inauguration, the Electricity Project Management Unit 1 has closely coordinated with contractors to supply, install, and test equipment. Key milestones include the successful rotor installation on October 7, 2025, and the energization of the AT2 transformer (T10) along with the completion of testing and calibration.

Previously, Unit 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project successfully synchronized with the national grid on August 19, 2025, in celebration of the 80th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in line with the Prime Minister’s directives.

The successful synchronization of Unit 2 marks a significant step toward completing the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project in 2025, serving as a practical contribution to the 14th National Party Congress.

Synchronization of Unit 2.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project is located on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. The plant is situated in Hoa Binh Ward, with the intake and water channel in Thong Nhat Ward, Phu Tho Province.

The expansion project shares the reservoir, dam, and spillway with the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. New constructions include the intake channel, water tunnel, and the plant itself.

Once operational, the project aims to increase peak load capacity for the national grid, maximizing the utilization of surplus water during the flood season from the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant for electricity generation.

Additionally, it will enhance frequency regulation and stability of the national grid, reduce system costs, and decrease the workload on existing units, thereby extending equipment lifespan and reducing maintenance expenses.
