The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) recently held a meeting with Thai Nguyen province to discuss the proposed Flood Control and Drainage System Project for the provincial center, along with the construction of the new Gia Bay Bridge.

According to the Thai Nguyen People’s Committee, the Cau River flows through the province for approximately 190 km, with 16 km passing through the provincial center. Due to climate change, extreme rainfall and flooding have increased, and the existing flood control infrastructure remains incomplete, leading to severe flooding in 2024 and 2025.

To mitigate flood damage, Thai Nguyen province has approved the investment in the Flood Control and Drainage System Project for the provincial center and the construction of the new Gia Bay Bridge. The total investment for the project is estimated at over VND 22.9 trillion.

Heavy rainfall in October 2025 caused widespread flooding in Thai Nguyen province.

The project includes several key components: the construction of Thac Huong 2 Spillway, riverbank dikes along the Cau River, pumping stations, dredging of Mo Linh Stream, and new river bridges.

Specifically, the new Gia Bay Bridge project has an estimated investment of VND 617 billion and is scheduled for implementation between 2025 and 2026.

Deputy Minister of MONRE, Nguyen Hoang Hiep, announced that in December 2025, the Ministry will require its affiliated units to complete an urgent study of the entire Cau River basin. This study aims to provide a comprehensive, data-driven approach to flood control solutions for the entire basin, including Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Hanoi, and Hai Phong.

Key focus areas include reviewing dike elevations, adjusting local planning, identifying flow bottlenecks, implementing rapid drainage solutions, dredging plans, and inter-regional reservoir operation strategies.

In 2025, Thai Nguyen province will commence the Urban Flood Drainage Project in the core area and begin construction of the new Gia Bay Bridge. Starting in 2026, the Thac Huong Dam project and dredging of central river and stream sections will be implemented. From 2026 to 2030, upgrades and renovations will be carried out on five major reservoirs (Cam Giang, Thanh Mai, Nghinh Tuong, Yen Trach, and Van Lang).

Trinh Xuan Truong, Secretary of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Committee, expressed the province’s agreement with the comprehensive, inter-regional approach linking the Cau and Thuong Rivers. This strategy aims to both control flooding and foster urban development along the riverbanks.

Thai Nguyen province commits to proactively allocating funds for the early construction of the Gia Bay Bridge and collaborating with MONRE to expedite the Thac Huong Dam project. The province will also complete land clearance and resource preparation for upstream flood-control reservoirs to ensure project feasibility and investment efficiency.
