Thai authorities crack down on counterfeit agricultural chemicals.

On November 15th, Thailand’s Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) and the Office of Agricultural Product and Processing Standards (OAPC) raided a warehouse in Lamphun province, seizing over 1 million baht (approximately $25,000 USD) worth of counterfeit herbicides, pesticides, and other agricultural chemicals.

The operation, led by CPPD Commander Major General Kongkrit Lertsitthikun, was spearheaded by Colonel Thanathat Sripipat, Acting Chief of CPPD Division 2, alongside Lieutenant Colonel Phongphana Kreetha and OAPC officers.

Investigations revealed a large quantity of banned or strictly controlled agricultural chemicals being sold online through various e-commerce platforms. These counterfeit products, mimicking well-known brands, posed significant risks to the environment, crops, and consumer health.

Following leads, investigators traced the source to a fertilizer shop in Lamphun province, identified as the storage and distribution hub for the counterfeit goods. Upon inspection, authorities discovered a large quantity of agricultural chemicals packaged in counterfeit branding, lacking proper documentation. The entire stock was confiscated for further analysis and investigation.

CPPD estimates the seized counterfeit goods to have a market value exceeding 1 million baht, marking one of the largest seizures of fake agricultural chemicals in northern Thailand this year.

Major General Kongkrit emphasized the raid as a crucial warning against the rising prevalence of illegal agricultural chemicals, particularly those traded online. He stressed that CPPD and OAPC will continue their investigations to dismantle the supply chain and gather evidence to prosecute all involved individuals.

Authorities urge consumers, especially farmers, to exercise caution when purchasing fertilizers and pesticides online. Using counterfeit products not only reduces crop yields but also harms soil, water sources, and human health.

The confiscated chemicals are currently undergoing analysis, and CPPD promises to release the investigation results upon completion.
