After nearly two months of construction, the expansion of the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway is taking shape, with continuous work from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh Bridge (Dong Nai). This Group A project, classified as an emergency construction, aims to expand the expressway from 4 to 8-10 lanes, reducing congestion and enhancing connectivity with Long Thanh Airport. The investor is the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), under the Ministry of Construction.
At Long Thanh Bridge, a bustling construction site on the Dong Nai River, multiple pile-driving and concrete pouring operations are underway. This marks the initial phase of expanding the bridge from 4 to 8 lanes.
On the Dong Nai bank, where land is readily available from Phase 1, contractors are actively working. From Km13+900 to Km25+920, the entire route is fenced off, with machinery and equipment densely packed from the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 2 junction to Long Thanh Bridge.
Several bored pile foundations have been completed, ready for the construction of the expanded viaduct. On the Dong Nai River, new bridge piers are being simultaneously erected, with deep pile foundations prepared for the expanded bridge section.
VEC announced that the 5 km section from Ring Road 2 to Ring Road 3 (Km4+000 – Km8+844.5) will be expanded from 4 to 8 lanes. The 15 km section from Ring Road 3 to the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway junction (excluding Long Thanh Bridge) will be widened to 10 lanes.
Despite the bustling construction site, the Ministry of Construction reports that progress is slower than required for an emergency project. Only 11.99 hectares of land need to be reclaimed (7.85 hectares in Ho Chi Minh City and 4.14 hectares in Dong Nai), but compensation, support, and resettlement efforts are still in the marking phase, with no on-site implementation yet.
The Ministry of Construction has instructed VEC to closely coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and Dong Nai Province to expedite legal procedures and ensure clear land handover this year. The investor must increase machinery and manpower to meet construction milestones, particularly for the Long Thanh Bridge expansion, which must be joined by December 2026 and completed by March 2027.
The Ministry also requires VEC to ensure contractors have sufficient construction materials like sand, fill soil, and stone, while maintaining traffic safety, labor safety, and environmental hygiene during simultaneous construction and operation.
As the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh Expressway is a vital artery for Phase 1 of Long Thanh Airport, accelerating progress is a top priority for the Ministry of Construction, the investor, and local authorities to meet deadlines.
The project’s total investment exceeds VND 16,300 billion, including VND 6,500 billion from the state budget and over VND 9,800 billion raised by VEC. The expressway is scheduled for substantial completion by late 2026, with the new Long Thanh Bridge expected to be joined in December 2026 and fully completed in Q1/2027.
