According to VTC News, after an extensive construction period, Long Thanh International Airport is entering its final acceleration phase. The airport, designed to meet the 4F standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is taking shape with key components such as the air traffic control tower, two runways, an apron, and the terminal building.
Vietnam Airport Corporation (ACV) reports that all construction activities are proceeding simultaneously, with the largest workforce and equipment mobilization ever seen in a Vietnamese aviation project. Approximately 14,000 engineers, experts, and workers, along with over 3,000 pieces of equipment, are working around the clock, reducing project timelines by 3 to 6 months.
The passenger terminal, a central component of Phase 1, is ahead of schedule. While the contract stipulates completion by November 2026, construction is expected to finish by December 19, 2025. Subsequent phases, including equipment installation, interior finishing, system integration, and testing, are projected to take approximately 6 months to ensure safety before operations begin.
Simultaneously, Runway 1 and the taxiway system have been completed, equipped, and calibrated for operation. The apron area west of the terminal is also ahead of schedule, with primary construction expected to finish by December 19, 2025, 5 months ahead of plan.
Runway 2, a critical component of the final phase, has completed earthworks, with 72.6% of the cement-treated base layer and over 60% of the concrete structure finished. ACV aims to complete this runway by December 19, 2025, with operations starting in June 2026.
Essential infrastructure systems, including technical tunnels, drainage, power supply networks, and elevated roads, are being expedited to meet adjusted deadlines. Many critical components are expected to be completed by December 19, 2025, facilitating the integration of airport infrastructure.
The underground fuel supply system, a technically demanding component, is nearing completion, with pipeline construction outside the apron expected to finish in December 2025. Equipment installation, connection, and testing will be completed by March 2026, 3 months ahead of schedule.
On the connecting highway, Route 1 opened for technical traffic on April 30, 2025, while Route 2 is 91.5% complete in terms of asphalt paving and will be fully finished in November 2025. These routes are crucial for ensuring smooth traffic flow to the airport from its opening day.
Supporting facilities such as parking lots, cargo terminals, and security fencing are also being accelerated, with timelines reduced by 3 to 6 months to align with main components.
Beyond construction, ACV is refining the operational framework and processes to position Long Thanh as a leading regional airport. Incheon International Airport, a 5-star Skytrax-rated and top-3 global airport, has been selected as the operational consultant.
ACV is developing detailed operational standards with a focus on delivering a 5-star passenger experience. Concurrently, business and financial strategies, along with airline allocation plans, are being finalized to ensure sustainable operations.
With construction and operational preparations accelerating, Long Thanh International Airport is on track for substantial completion by late 2025. The project is finalizing its last stages to welcome its first commercial flights in the first half of 2026, becoming a new aviation hub for Vietnam and the region.
