Authorities raid a large-scale counterfeit bottled water operation in Basti, Uttar Pradesh, India.
A major counterfeit bottled water operation has been dismantled by authorities in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The raid was conducted by the Food Safety Department following a complaint from the owners of the Vedic water brand, who reported a significant amount of counterfeit products circulating in the market.
The illicit operation was based in a warehouse near the State Bank of India, in the Polytechnic Square area, under the jurisdiction of the Purani Basti police station. The warehouse is owned by the son of former City Council Chairman, Ashok Gupta.
During the inspection, authorities discovered numerous bottles packaged under the “Vedic” and “Vedic Plus” labels, which were confirmed to be counterfeit. The water was bottled on-site and stored in the warehouse for distribution. Two individuals, Mubarak Ali and Satish Singh, were identified as directly involved in the packaging and transportation of the fake water.

In total, the Food Safety Department seized 2,577 half-liter bottles and 1,128 one-liter bottles. The total value of the counterfeit goods is estimated at 9 lakh rupees, approximately 300 million Vietnamese dong. All bottles bore the Vedic or Vedic Plus labels and were packaged to deceive consumers.
According to the owners of the Vedic Water brand, these counterfeit products have severely damaged the brand’s reputation and pose a significant health risk to consumers. Local authorities stated that the operation was only uncovered after a formal complaint was filed, leading to the planning and execution of a surprise raid to catch the illegal activity in progress.
Police and food safety officials have filed a case and launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the network behind the counterfeit water production. Officials are also scrutinizing distribution points and tracking down individuals involved in organizing the operation.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, particularly as the demand for bottled water continues to rise. Many are calling for strict action against those involved and increased inspections of bottled water businesses to ensure consumer safety.
The Food Safety Department has confirmed that all seized counterfeit bottles have been sealed, and legal action is being taken against the operators. The investigation continues to trace the entire distribution network and prevent further circulation of counterfeit water in the market.
