The existing coastal road connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Lam Dong, built nearly 20 years ago, is undergoing a major upgrade. As of June 2023, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial government has initiated a project to expand the entire route to 6-8 lanes, with a design speed of 80 km/h, to meet the growing traffic demands.
The project is divided into 11 segments, spanning approximately 77 km, with a total investment of over 7 trillion VND. This expansion to 6-8 lanes is a critical transportation infrastructure, enhancing inter-regional connectivity and fostering economic development in the eastern region of Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces.
The intersection with National Highway 51 has been upgraded to 8-10 lanes, significantly improving traffic flow and reducing congestion. Additionally, supporting facilities such as signage, sidewalks, green spaces, and lawns have been completed, creating a seamless and aesthetically pleasing landscape.
After nearly two years of construction, the Cay Khe 2 Bridge is in its final stages. The bridge deck is being completed, and the approach roads have been paved with asphalt, preparing for the final inspection and opening to traffic.
On-site observations by VTC News reporters reveal multiple teams of workers and heavy machinery finalizing essential components such as guardrails, median strips, expansion joints, and lighting systems. These efforts aim to accelerate the project’s completion and bring it into service as soon as possible.
The section from the National Highway 51 intersection to the Cua Lap Bridge, passing through marshland and aquaculture ponds, is taking shape. Many areas are being paved with asphalt, setting the stage for the final road surface completion.
At the intersection of DT994 and the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway connector, the construction site is bustling with activity. Multiple teams and dozens of heavy machines are engaged in pile driving, overpass construction, and road foundation work to ensure the project stays on schedule.
Adjacent to the DT994 and Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway connector intersection, the newly constructed Cua Lap 2 Bridge, running parallel to the existing bridge, has been completed and opened to traffic. This enhances the traffic capacity along the coastal route.
The section passing through Deo Nuoc Ngot is being expanded using the cut-and-cover method, aimed at improving traffic safety and reducing travel time through the area.
To execute the project, contractors are focusing on driven pile foundations to ensure a robust base for the bridge. Many piers have completed girder installation and concrete pouring for the bridge deck, with construction progressing as planned.
At the beginning of the Deo Nuoc Ngot section, contractors are deploying workers and machinery to level the ground, lay aggregate, and pave asphalt, preparing for the next phases of the project.
Approximately 30 km away, the section through the Binh Chau resort area has been expanded to 8 lanes with funding from private enterprises, significantly improving local infrastructure and connectivity.
Upon completion, the project will significantly upgrade the region’s transportation infrastructure, creating an economic corridor connecting the Cai Mep – Thi Vai port complex with Long Thanh Airport and the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway, meeting inter-provincial freight transport demands.
