Maersk, the world’s largest logistics and container shipping conglomerate based in Denmark, is actively exploring opportunities to invest in and construct a large-scale container port in Vietnam, aligned with sustainable development and carbon emission reduction goals.

This announcement was made by Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk), during his meeting with General Secretary To Lam on the afternoon of November 18, 2025, in Hanoi.

As reported by the Government Electronic Newspaper , General Secretary To Lam expressed enthusiasm for the positive growth of the Vietnam-Denmark Comprehensive Partnership (established in 2013) and the Green Strategic Partnership (established in November 2023). These partnerships serve as catalysts for strengthening bilateral relations across all sectors, emphasizing green and sustainable development.

General Secretary To Lam emphasized Vietnam’s focus on infrastructure development, particularly green seaports, to support sustainable growth objectives.

Highlighting Maersk’s global vision, strategy, and investment plans, Vincent Clerc affirmed Vietnam’s continued importance as a key partner. The company aims to invest in and develop a large-scale, sustainable container port, alongside strategic logistics projects in Vietnam. These initiatives are designed to support Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth, transition to a low-carbon economy, climate change adaptation, and the achievement of Net Zero targets.

Maersk’s Commitment to Net Zero

Maersk reports that annually, 100,000 ships consume 300 million tons of fuel to transport 11 billion tons of cargo worldwide. This accounts for approximately 1.076 billion tons of CO₂ emissions each year, representing about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

To foster a greener, more sustainable future, Maersk has set an ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040. Central to this objective is addressing the largest emission source: fuel for vessels.

According to Maersk, the global shipping industry must transition to low-emission fuels such as bio/e-methanol, bio/e-methane, biodiesel, and ammonia.

Maersk is collaborating with leading fuel companies to accelerate and scale the production of bio/e-methanol. Notably, European Energy (Denmark) is set to supply Maersk with 16,000 tons of e-methanol.

Since 2023, Maersk’s new vessels have demonstrated the feasibility of methanol-powered container ships. The company aims to standardize dual-fuel engines across all newly built Maersk vessels.

In 2023, the launch of Laura Mærsk marked a historic milestone. With Laura Mærsk, Maersk achieved a world-first as the planet’s inaugural green container ship, powered by green methanol.

Building on this success, Maersk is expanding its low-emission vessel fleet by 2030.

Maersk’s decarbonization efforts extend beyond its fleet. The company is reevaluating all business aspects, from ports to road transport, warehousing to last-mile delivery, to ensure energy-efficient solutions across the board.
