Record-Breaking Construction Speed in Aviation
On November 20, the Central Working Group and General Secretary To Lam, along with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung on November 19, received a report from An Giang Province’s Chairman Ho Van Mung. The report highlighted seven projects meeting or exceeding their timelines, including the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport.
According to Sun Group, the project investor, Phase 1 aims to serve APEC 2027. Since July 2025, construction has accelerated on Runway 2, the VIP Terminal, and Terminal T2. Remarkably, Terminal T2 reached its fourth floor in just four months.
By the end of 2025, Terminal T2 is expected to complete 85% of its raw structure, while the VIP Terminal will achieve 100% raw structure, steel framework, and MEP systems. Runway 2 is set for completion by June 2026, the VIP Terminal by October 2026, and Terminal T2 by Q1 2027.

The entire project will be completed in just 18 months, setting a new record in aviation construction. During his visit to An Giang on November 19, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung praised the province’s efforts and the investors’ rapid execution.
“Sun Group’s projects, including the airport and APEC Convention Center, are progressing exceptionally well. Every two months, significant changes are visible—from foundation work to structural developments. This ensures confidence in meeting deadlines,” he commended.
A World-Class International Airport
As a key project for APEC 2027 and a gateway to elevate Phu Quoc’s global status, Phu Quoc International Airport is being upgraded to world-class standards. Invested by Sun Group, the project involves CPG Singapore (designer of Changi Airport) and Artelia Airport (France) as consultants. Upon completion, it will be operated by Changi Airport Group (CAG).
With a total investment of nearly VND 22 trillion, the airport will meet ICAO’s 4E standards, accommodating wide-body aircraft like Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350. Spanning 1,050 hectares, it will serve 20 million passengers annually, a 4.5-fold increase in capacity.

Infrastructure includes expanding Runway 1 to 3,500 meters and adding Runway 2 at 3,300 meters. The apron will accommodate over 120 aircraft, with 71 direct jet bridge connections.
Terminal T2 draws inspiration from the Phoenix, symbolizing power and rebirth. The 6,000m² VIP Terminal, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, resembles a sea eagle, embodying freedom and harmony with nature. It will host APEC 2027 leaders and future VIP events.

The airport will integrate cutting-edge technologies, including TAM (Total Airport Management), biometric systems for seamless travel, ICS baggage handling, automated parking, underground refueling, and remote jet bridges. These innovations aim for a 15-20 second check-in process, positioning it as a leading smart airport in the region.
Phu Quoc International Airport’s rapid development underscores Vietnam’s commitment to APEC 2027 and Phu Quoc’s long-term growth. As each phase completes ahead of schedule, it demonstrates the synergy between government vision and private sector innovation, transforming Phu Quoc into a global hub for tourism, services, and creativity.
