Black Friday: Consumers Tighten Budgets, Shop Smarter

This Black Friday transcends the traditional "sale season" narrative, evolving into a full-blown retail battleground. With consumers tightening their purse strings for months, this year's event ignites a fierce competition among retailers, all vying to unleash pent-up purchasing power.

In recent days, businesses have been heavily promoting deals across e-commerce platforms and retail stores to boost sales during Black Friday.

Reports indicate that high-end electronics, technology, and home appliances remain the market’s focal point. Smartphones, laptops, robot vacuums, and air purifiers are seeing discounts of 30-70%, along with enticing offers like trade-ins, 0% installment plans, extended warranties, and free gifts with purchase.

Mr. Nguyễn Mạnh Tùng, a representative from a Hanoi-based electronics retailer, commented: “Customers this year are more cautious but are willing to buy when they see genuine value. Stores are focusing on tangible benefits rather than just discount percentages. When customers feel respected, they make purchases quickly.”

Unlike previous years, Black Friday 2025 has seen a surge in discounts for essential consumer goods. Cooking oil, milk, laundry detergent, and children’s items are discounted by 20-50%, with free shipping to attract a broader audience.

Crowds flock to shopping malls for Black Friday deals.

At shopping centers, many stores have launched promotions. For instance, Vạn Hạnh Mall offers up to 70% off across 200+ brands, while Vincom provides 600,000 VND cashback for JCB card payments and free thermal mugs for purchases over 1,699,000 VND. Fashion brands’ time-limited discounts have significantly increased evening foot traffic.

AEON MALL Hà Đông’s Black Friday event runs from November 21-30. Weekend crowds are growing, with shoppers targeting deals on fashion, cosmetics, and home goods.

Brands offer 30-80% discounts; home and fashion items are up to 75% off, and cosmetics are discounted by up to 58% with additional gifts.

Ms. Thu Hà, a home goods salesperson, shared: “This year, customers are more selective and no longer buy just because something is cheap. They research products in advance and wait for deep discounts before purchasing. This is a significant shift from previous years.”

Black Friday 2025 highlights the trend of shoppers targeting favorite items with discount codes. Users save products, set price alerts, and buy during peak discount hours, causing some items to sell out within minutes.

Shoppers are more discerning during this year’s Black Friday.

On e-commerce platforms, competition is fierce. Shopee offers vouchers up to 1.5 million VND and cumulative discounts up to 11 million VND. TikTok Shop features fixed-price deals from 9,000 to 99,000 VND. Lazada provides unlimited free shipping, and Tiki guarantees 2-hour delivery for home goods and laptops.

However, consumer caution persists. Many check price histories and seller reviews to avoid “fake promotions” where original prices are inflated before discounts.

The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) estimates Q4 e-commerce sales at 105 trillion VND, with annual online retail reaching 25-32 billion USD. Forty-nine percent of consumers shop exclusively online, with 70% using smartphones. The agency sees Black Friday 2025 as a major boost, kicking off the Christmas and Lunar New Year shopping season.
