When BYD first entered the global market a few years ago, it made a bold statement with its 90-degree rotating infotainment screen. Users could operate the screen in both portrait and landscape modes. While initially seen as a novelty, this rotating screen set BYD vehicles apart from their competitors.

However, the Chinese automotive giant has recently announced that the rotating screen will be phased out in the near future. BYD Vice President Stella Li confirmed this decision, stating that although customers appreciated the feature, it posed limitations for certain applications.

Li emphasized that this was particularly true for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As a result, the automaker has removed the feature from the new Atto 2 model and will eliminate it from other vehicles moving forward.

Going forward, all screens will be locked in landscape mode. Vice President Stella Li shared with *Autocar*: “We are starting to engage with a lot of applications.” She added, “The Atto 2 will be the first model to integrate Google and Apple CarPlay. And if they want to deliver the best experience, the rotating screen would restrict their applications.”

Additionally, Li discussed market feedback, noting, “Secondly, we’ve seen market feedback. People love the rotating screen, but the usage rate is very low.” According to BYD, their infotainment screen was initially considered more user-friendly in portrait mode when the vehicle was stationary and during navigation.

However, in tested models, experts found that operating the screen in landscape mode was consistently easier. This may be due to landscape being the standard orientation in most modern vehicles. Another critical factor is that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto only function in landscape mode.

In the same interview, Li mentioned that BYD will accelerate partnerships with major companies, including Apple and Google. Thus, adopting a cleaner and simpler interface is a logical step.

In Vietnam, BYD’s entire lineup, including the Seal, Atto 2, Atto 3, Seal 5, and Sealion 6, features this unique rotating screen. If the feature is discontinued, these models could become highly sought-after collectibles.
