Unlocking the Golden Demographic: Why Youth Empowerment is Key to Transforming Potential into Power

Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister, Bùi Thanh Sơn, highlights the country's fortunate "golden population structure," but warns that this demographic advantage will not automatically translate into "golden thinking" or "golden capabilities" unless the younger generation proactively strives to keep pace with the evolving trends of the modern era.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his delight at immersing himself in the vibrant, intellectual, and aspirational atmosphere of the “Contemporary Smart Generation” Talkshow.

He highly commended Ho Chi Minh City, the World Economic Forum, and partners for their initiative in organizing this meaningful event dedicated to the youth as part of the Autumn Economic Forum 2025.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the world is witnessing profound, transformative shifts, including the Fourth Industrial Revolution, digital transformation, green transition, knowledge-based economy, and circular economy. These trends are profoundly and comprehensively impacting nations, businesses, and individuals, particularly the younger generation.

For Vietnam to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2045, entering an era of prosperity and strength, decisive policies are being vigorously implemented. These include breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation; education and training reforms; private sector development as a key economic driver; and international integration in the new context.

Vietnam identifies science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as pivotal breakthroughs for national development in the new era. It views “green transition in the digital age” not just as a global trend but as a mandate for sustainable development.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that in all these policies and priorities, the youth—the nation’s future leaders—are at the heart of Vietnam’s vision, with immense trust and expectation.

Regarding Ho Chi Minh City, with its role as the nation’s economic powerhouse, the Vietnamese Party and State have provided optimal institutional and decentralized frameworks for the city’s robust growth.

The city has been granted special mechanisms and pilot policies, particularly in science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, strategic infrastructure, international finance, and talent attraction.

With confidence in the city’s dynamism and the youth’s central role, the Government pledges to remove barriers and mobilize resources for Ho Chi Minh City to soar in this era of national advancement.

The youth are the nation’s future leaders and the key drivers of Vietnam’s ambitious policies, crucial for achieving prosperity and global standing in the new era.

Emphasizing Vietnam’s greatest asset—its 100 million people, especially the innovative and aspirational youth—the Deputy Prime Minister noted the vast opportunities for young talent. However, he also underscored their heavy responsibility in nation-building and defense.

Vietnam’s “golden demographic” will only translate into “golden capabilities” if the youth actively embrace modern development trends, he added.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged young people to recognize their roles, opportunities, and challenges, emphasizing that no one can prepare them for the future better than themselves.

The Talkshow’s theme, “Contemporary Smart Generation,” conveys a powerful message. The nation needs young people to innovate, take risks, and solve pressing global challenges with agility and creativity.

“Contemporary” means acting now. Vietnam cannot afford to wait, as the need for breakthrough development is urgent. The nation calls on its youth to act today.

The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed the Government’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability. However, it is the youth who must harness these resources effectively for collective progress.

He encouraged young people to continuously learn and develop both talent and virtue, to innovate not just for personal gain but for national prosperity and a sustainable, peaceful world.

He expressed confidence that Vietnam’s youth, including those at the Talkshow, will embody the spirit of “Wherever needed, youth will be there,” driving green and digital transformation in Vietnam’s new era.

Vietnam plays a key role in advancing sustainable development

At the Talkshow, Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside, Vice-Chancellor of RMIT University Vietnam, emphasized the youth’s critical role in sustainable development amid digital transformation, advanced manufacturing, and green transition.

Global challenges like climate change demand innovative solutions, and Vietnam’s tech-savvy, adaptable youth are poised to lead in green technologies and eco-friendly digital solutions.

Professor Thompson-Whiteside noted that the future of work prioritizes creativity over efficiency, urging the youth to embrace a mindset of “learn fast, experiment fast, fail fast, improve fast.”

39% of core workforce skills will evolve by 2030

WEF Managing Director Stephan Mergenthaler shared that 39% of core workforce skills will evolve by 2030, according to the Future of Jobs Report. This underscores the need for capabilities like analytical thinking, resilience, creativity, and lifelong learning.

While technology redefines human roles, uniquely human skills—creativity, adaptability, leadership, and social influence—remain irreplaceable.

By 2030, one-third of jobs will be technology-driven, one-third human-machine collaborative, and one-third purely human-driven, requiring the youth to prepare for human-AI collaboration.

Mergenthaler highlighted three mindset shifts: competing to collaborating with AI, lifelong learning, and interdisciplinary thinking—skills machines cannot replicate.
