Up Close: The 2,000-Hectare Site of Northern Vietnam’s Largest Airport
Gia Bình Airport (Bac Ninh) is planned as a dual-use international airport for both civil and defense purposes, spanning approximately 1,960 hectares with two runways measuring 3,500-4,000 meters. It aims to serve 30 million passengers by 2030 and 50 million by 2050.
Construction has begun with initial land clearance and technical infrastructure development.
Machinery and equipment have been operating continuously to prepare the construction site.
The project is expected to connect via highways and urban railways, becoming a new aviation hub in the North alongside Noi Bai Airport. The total investment is approximately 196 trillion VND (7.5 billion USD), with 161.6 trillion VND allocated for the 2021-2030 phase, combining state and PPP funding.
With a construction area of 1,960 hectares, Gia Bình Airport will be the largest in the North, surpassing Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat (both around 1,500 hectares) and second only to Long Thanh Airport (5,000 hectares).
Upon completion, Gia Bình Airport will handle up to 50 million passengers annually, alleviating pressure on Noi Bai Airport and enhancing international connectivity for the Northern Key Economic Region.
The 2021-2030 planning aims for a 4E-class airport (ICAO standards) with a capacity of 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually, accommodating aircraft like B777, B787, A350, A321, and specialized planes.
Approximately 1,884.88 hectares of land will be acquired, including 159.4 hectares of residential land, 1,184.78 hectares of agricultural land, 415.9 hectares of non-agricultural land, and 124.8 hectares for defense and security purposes.
Around 7,100 households and 118 organizations will be affected, with approximately 5,800 households requiring relocation and resettlement.
Land clearance for agricultural areas is expected to complete by November 30, 2025, with resettlement areas ready by December 15, 2025.
Do Dinh Huu, Director of Bac Ninh Land Fund Development Center, stated that over 750 hectares have been compensated, totaling more than 2.5 trillion VND.
Residents of Gia Bình, Nhan Thang, and Luong Tai communes receive compensation for land clearance.
Compensation distribution has been transparent and secure, with strong public support. Strict security measures ensure a smooth process for all residents.
The Ministry of Construction has approved the adjusted planning for Gia Bình International Airport for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. The airport will serve both civil and defense purposes, implemented in two phases.
The 2021-2030 goal is a 4E-class airport (ICAO standards) with a capacity of 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually, using aircraft like B777, B787, A350, A321, and specialized planes.
By 2030, the airport will have 81 aircraft parking positions, expanding to 123 by 2050. The passenger terminal will initially handle 30 million passengers annually, increasing to 50 million by 2050.
The cargo terminal will manage 1.6 million tons annually by 2030, rising to 2.5 million tons by 2050.
