Ho Chi Minh City Launches Architectural Design Competition for Go Cong Interchange on Ring Road 3

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a plan to organize a design competition for the Go Cong Interchange, a critical component of Component Project 2 of Ring Road 3. This includes the comprehensive development of the interchange and a connecting branch from Hanoi Highway to Go Cong. The decision follows the City Council’s approval of the investment policy on August 28.

The competition will be chaired by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, with the Management Board of Traffic Construction Investment Projects overseeing its organization. It will be an open competition, welcoming all qualified architecture, planning, transportation, and bridge engineering firms, joint ventures, and consultants.

Located at the intersection of Ring Road 3 and Nguyen Xien Street (Long Phuoc Ward), the Go Cong Interchange spans approximately 24.87 hectares. The competition aims to select an innovative, iconic, and modern architectural design that will serve as a landmark on this strategic transportation axis.

The connecting branch from Hanoi Highway to Go Cong starts at Tram 2 Interchange and ends at Go Cong, with a total length of 5.9 km. This entirely new road features two parallel routes, each with three lanes, totaling six lanes to meet the high traffic demand in the Eastern region, where existing roads are overburdened.

Modern 4-Level Interchange with Investment Exceeding VND 12,400 Billion

The Go Cong Interchange is designed as a 4-level, grade-separated intersection with a central roundabout and four exit branches (N1, N2, N3, N4), each with two lanes. On Ring Road 3, an elevated bridge with four lanes will separate traffic flows, reducing conflicts and ensuring smooth movement. The tunnel on the branch from Hanoi Highway to Long Phuoc, connecting to Dong Nai 2 Bridge, will be implemented in a later phase.

Additionally, the project includes major overpasses: Le Van Viet – D1 Intersection Overpass (two units, three lanes each), Go Cong Canal Overpass (two units, three lanes each), and Trau Trau Canal Overpass (four units, two with three lanes and two with four lanes). These critical infrastructure works will ensure continuous traffic flow on the vital Ring Road 3.

The total investment for the project exceeds VND 12,400 billion, fully funded by Ho Chi Minh City’s budget. Specifically, the Go Cong Interchange and the Hanoi Highway – Go Cong branch will cost approximately VND 5,329 billion.

The project timeline includes land clearance from Q4/2025 to Q4/2026, groundbreaking in Q1/2027, and completion by Q4/2028. Once operational, the interchange will directly connect Ring Road 3 to Ring Road 2, enhancing traffic efficiency in the Eastern region and alleviating congestion at the eastern gateway, which has seen a significant increase in vehicle volume in recent years.

With rapid urbanization and growing infrastructure demands, projects like the Go Cong Interchange not only address long-standing congestion in the Eastern region but also contribute to a comprehensive inter-regional transportation network, positioning Ring Road 3 as a strategic axis for the entire Southeast region.

Alongside strategic infrastructure investments, Ho Chi Minh City continues to solidify its role as the nation’s largest economic hub. Following the consolidation of GRDP figures with Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the total regional GRDP is estimated at VND 2,707,805 billion, accounting for approximately one-quarter of the national GDP. This underscores the city’s robust economic momentum and its leadership in urban development, logistics, and industry across Vietnam.
