At 5:42 PM on November 23, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and the Central Power Projects Management Board (CPMB) successfully energized the 500kV shunt reactor at the Pleiku 2 500kV Substation. This milestone is part of the project to install 500kV shunt reactors, optimizing reactive power compensation following the commissioning of the third 500kV circuit line.

This achievement marks a significant step in optimizing reactive power, stabilizing voltage, and enhancing the reliability of the power transmission grid as the system enters the synchronized operation phase of the third 500kV circuit line. The project was completed one month ahead of schedule.

Stakeholders witness the energization of the 500kV Shunt Reactor at Pleiku 2 Substation

The “Optimization of Capacitor and Reactor Compensation Capacity on the 500kV Power System” initiative, led by EVNNPT, addresses voltage stability challenges amid the expanding 500kV transmission grid and increasing North-Central-South transmission pressures. This special energy project, categorized as Group B, is managed by CPMB under EVNNPT’s investment.

The project spans eight operational 500kV substations across Vietnam: Son La (Son La Province), Ha Tinh (Ha Tinh Province), Da Nang (Da Nang City), Thanh My (Da Nang City), Doc Soi (Quang Ngai Province), Pleiku (Gia Lai Province), Pleiku 2 (Gia Lai Province), and Di Linh (Lam Dong Province).

The Pleiku 2 Substation’s 500kV shunt reactor installation includes reconfiguring a 500kV-157 MVAr reactor bay. Equipment was relocated within the station, with the KH503-157 MVAr reactor switched from the Easup 500kV line to busbar C51 after being set aside as a reserve.

The commissioning of the 500kV-157MVAr shunt reactor at Pleiku 2 Substation completes the reactive power compensation configuration in the Central Highlands. This optimizes voltage control, reduces hydro power mobilization costs for reactive support, and acts as a critical “regulator” for grid stability amid seasonal load fluctuations and rising renewable energy integration.

CPMB representatives noted challenges during installation, including limited workspace, live equipment at the substation, and difficulties in securing outages due to maximal hydropower utilization. However, support from dispatch centers, Power Transmission Company 3, and Gia Lai Power Transmission Team enabled swift, ahead-of-schedule completion.

Overview of Pleiku 2 500kV Substation

The Pleiku 2 shunt reactor installation is part of EVNNPT’s broader initiative to meet the demands of an increasingly complex grid. With the third 500kV circuit line (Quang Trach – Doc Soi – Pleiku 2) operational, high-voltage nodes, excess reactive power, and low-frequency resonance risks are more pronounced. Shunt reactors provide essential static compensation, offering sustainable and flexible voltage control.

In the Central Highlands and Central regions, where Pleiku 2 Substation is a critical hub, shunt reactors maintain voltage within limits, reduce overvoltage risks for 500/220 kV transformers, and minimize costly synchronous hydro generator compensation. Once operational, these reactors will stabilize voltage across Pleiku – Chon Thanh – Doc Soi, ensuring reliability along the North-Central-South 500kV corridor.

This project advances EVNNPT’s series of 500kV shunt reactor installations, creating a synchronized voltage regulation network to enhance national transmission efficiency from 2025 to 2030.

The successful Pleiku 2 installation motivates accelerated progress on remaining project components, targeting full completion in 2025.
