Inside Long Thanh Airport Terminal Ahead of Its Inaugural Flight

The Long Thanh Airport terminal is in a race against time as it accelerates the installation of critical infrastructure, including steel pipe frameworks, elevators, escalators, electrical systems, and final technical components, all in preparation for its inaugural flight scheduled for December 19th.

In late November, VTC News reporters observed the bustling construction site of Long Thanh Airport, where thousands of engineers and workers, alongside specialized equipment, worked tirelessly to complete the final stages before the airport’s inaugural flight on December 19th.

The centerpiece of the project, the passenger terminal with its lotus-inspired design, is now clearly visible from above. Inside, teams are installing passenger boarding bridges, elevators, escalators, electrical systems, air conditioning, and technical connections—critical components for passenger operations.

According to Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the terminal area alone has mobilized approximately 14,000 engineers, experts, and workers, along with over 3,000 pieces of equipment, operating 24/7.

Final stages of fire safety, electrical, drainage, glass installation, wall cladding, and ceiling work are in full swing to meet the December 19th deadline.

Inside the terminal, all sections are working urgently to prepare for the first flight.

The terminal’s roof, a five-layer structure and a key architectural feature, is nearly complete, with final touches underway.

At the glass installation sites, workers are finalizing tasks to meet international aviation standards.

On the terminal’s first floor, housing the baggage handling system, domestic VIP area, and departure gates, tiling, stonework, ceiling, and wall finishes are accelerating.

The contractor reports that these sections are ready for handover, supporting Phase 1 completion.

To ensure timely completion, contractors across the site are working at full capacity, 24/7.

Engineers and workers are on a “3-shift, 4-team” schedule, working day and night, including holidays, to meet deadlines.

Alongside the terminal, Runway 1 and taxiways are complete and certified. The Western apron is ahead of schedule, expected to finish by December 19, 2025, five months early. Runway 2 is 60% complete and aims to open by June 2026.

Utility lines, water drainage, power supply, and road connections are being expedited. The underground fuel system, a high-tech component, is set to complete in December 2025 and test in March 2026, three months ahead of schedule.

During a site inspection, General Secretary Tô Lâm praised the project’s progress, highlighting government and local support. He emphasized Long Thanh Airport’s strategic role in boosting regional and national economic growth and Vietnam’s global aviation standing.

He urged smart design for passenger convenience and optimal transport connections, suggesting a 30-minute travel time from Long Thanh to Ho Chi Minh City via rail or metro.
