“Once-a-Year Root Delicacy: Crisp, Sweet, and Dew-Fresh Flavor That Leaves You Longing for More”

Nestled in the heart of Thanh Nam, the elusive *củ niễng* graces the region just once a year, during the crisp onset of winter. Revered as a rare "gift from heaven," this delicacy emerges despite the chilly rains that drive up the price of greens. Along the old bypass of Nam Dinh City, hundreds of bustling stalls proudly showcase this freshly unearthed treasure, still carrying the essence of the morning dew.

From the early hours of the morning, residents of Hong Quang Ward (Ninh Binh Province) gather along the roadside, displaying freshly harvested bunches of arrowhead tubers still glistening with dew. Vehicles continuously pull over to purchase, creating a bustling atmosphere of trade.

“With vegetable prices on the rise, arrowhead tubers are selling faster this year. Some days, I sell out dozens of bunches by midday,” says Ms. Thuy (54) from Hong Quang Ward.

Arrowhead tubers are the roots of a plant grown in sandy soil in this region. The harvest season lasts less than two weeks, typically occurring at the end of the year. After digging, locals trim the stems, wash the tubers, and bundle them for sale.

Locals describe arrowhead tubers as crisp with a mild sweetness, often enjoyed with fermented shrimp paste, sesame salt, or pickled. Due to their short season and limited shelf life, they are quickly consumed, especially when green vegetables are expensive.

Along the bypass road, numerous small clusters of vendors set up shop. Sellers display their goods in front of their homes or under makeshift wooden stalls. Buyers are primarily passersby or Hanoi residents visiting relatives.

Beyond individual customers, many wholesalers collect large quantities of arrowhead tubers to transport to Hanoi.

Despite being a humble product, arrowhead tubers maintain a stable price of 10,000 to 15,000 VND per bunch, depending on size. For many families, this provides significant income during the short season.

“We rely on these few days all year. After harvesting, we sell immediately to earn extra money for Tet,” shares Ms. Thuy (62).

For those far from home, receiving a bunch of arrowhead tubers during the cold season is more than just a meal—it’s a nostalgic reminder of childhood sent from their homeland.

Amid the growing diversity of urban food, arrowhead tubers remain a cherished specialty, their unique flavor deeply rooted in Nam Dinh’s culture.
