Black Friday Sales Fail to Attract Crowds Despite Massive Discounts
On the evening of November 27th, just before Black Friday, a stroll along Chua Boc Street—Hanoi’s fashion hub—revealed stores unanimously slashing prices by 30-80%.
Many stores also offered “buy one, get one free” deals to lure shoppers.
One store advertised products starting at just 49,000 VND, enticing passersby to browse.
According to a staff member, the store combined banner ads with livestreams on social media. “Our wool products, priced between 80,000 and 150,000 VND, are customer favorites,” they noted.
Despite steep discounts, few shoppers made purchases, and the usual Black Friday crowds were notably absent.
The quiet atmosphere persisted across stores. One shop displayed budget items (98,000–198,000 VND) on the sidewalk, yet few buyers showed interest.
This year, despite 80% discounts and promotions like “buy X, get X free,” shoppers remained cautious, carefully considering purchases.
Ms. Nguyen Minh Phuong (Nguyen Trai Ward, Thanh Xuan) sought 80%-off heels but left unsatisfied. “Limited sizes for heavily discounted items suggest these might be old stock or unsellable at full price,” she said.
A store offering 50% off plus free gifts remained deserted during peak hours.
Chua Boc’s “fashion street” was eerily quiet on the eve of Black Friday, the year’s biggest sale event.
Dong Tac Street’s apparel stores were equally desolate. A “buy 1 get 1, buy 10 get 10” promo drew only a handful of browsers.
Sellers attributed the lull to online shopping trends and pre-Tet budget tightening, leaving physical stores unusually quiet this Black Friday.
