The Vietnam Aviation Authority has proposed the addition of Mang Den and Van Phong airports to the national airport system master plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. This move aims to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism and logistics, and drive development in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions.

The Vietnam Aviation Authority has recently submitted to the Ministry of Construction for review the adjusted master plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

In its proposal to include Mang Den and Van Phong airports in the national airport system, the Vietnam Aviation Authority highlights that the approved regional master plans designate Khanh Hoa as a growth hub and position Van Phong as a logistics and services center in the North Central and Central Coastal regions.

The Central Highlands regional plan identifies Mang Den as a national tourism area and aims to develop infrastructure connecting the Central Highlands with the Central Coastal region, including the potential investment in an airport at Mang Den.

At the local level, Khanh Hoa Province’s plan allocates land for the development of Van Phong Airport. Both the former Kon Tum Province plan and the Mang Den Tourism Area master plan identify Mang Den Airport as a key infrastructure project.

The adjusted master plan for the Van Phong Economic Zone continues to allocate space for an airport function, supporting the development of a modern maritime economic center.

The feasibility studies for both airports have been reviewed by the Ministry of Construction, and Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved the policy to include them in the master plan.

“The inclusion of Mang Den and Van Phong airports in the national airport system master plan is essential, ensuring alignment with national, regional, and provincial development goals. It will facilitate private investment, support tourism and logistics, and strengthen regional connectivity, defense, and security in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands,” stated the Vietnam Aviation Authority.

According to the plan, Mang Den Airport will be a 4C-class airport with an estimated investment cost of nearly VND 5 trillion and a total planned area of approximately 350 hectares.

Van Phong Airport will be a 4E-class airport with an estimated investment cost of over VND 9.2 trillion and a total planned area of more than 497 hectares.

If these two airports are included in the master plan, by 2030, Vietnam will have 33 airports with a total capacity of 297 million passengers. By 2050, the country will have 36 airports with a total system capacity of 538.5 million passengers.

Correspondingly, by 2030, the total land requirement for the entire airport system will be over 26,638 hectares. By 2050, this figure will exceed 27,842 hectares.
