Another Japanese Car Model Set to Exit the Vietnamese Market?

The Outlander has quietly vanished from Mitsubishi Vietnam's website, coinciding with its recent two-month sales slump, where it failed to record a single unit sold.

On the official website of Mitsubishi Vietnam, the Outlander is no longer listed in the product catalog. Although the manufacturer has not officially announced the future of this model, dealerships currently have no new units available. Sales consultants have also stopped accepting deposits for the Outlander for several months now.

This development suggests that the Mitsubishi Outlander is at risk of being discontinued in Vietnam. This outcome seems inevitable, given the model’s record-low sales figures in 2025.

The Mitsubishi Outlander recorded sales of fewer than 400 units in the first 10 months of 2025.

According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) sales report, the Mitsubishi Outlander saw zero sales in September and October. The last recorded sales were in August, with only 35 units sold.

In the cumulative 10-month period of 2025, the Mitsubishi Outlander has sold a mere 362 units, the lowest in the mid-size SUV segment. It is also one of Mitsubishi Vietnam’s two lowest-selling models, second only to the Pajero Sport.

The primary reason for the Outlander’s decline in its segment is its outdated design compared to competitors. While rivals have launched upgraded versions or new generations with advanced safety features and enhanced equipment, the Outlander in Vietnam remains the third-generation model.

The fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander, featuring a new design, advanced technology, and a hybrid (PHEV) option, has been launched internationally, but the Vietnamese market still offers the older model.

The outdated design and lack of modern features have made the Mitsubishi Outlander less appealing to Vietnamese consumers, especially as buyers increasingly prioritize advanced technology.

If the Outlander is indeed discontinued in Vietnam, it will be the latest Japanese vehicle to exit the market this year, following the Mazda6, Toyota Innova, and Honda Civic Type R. Previously, in 2024, the Mazda BT-50, Suzuki Ciaz, Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Yaris, and Nissan Kicks were also discontinued, primarily due to low sales.

Despite the potential discontinuation of the Outlander, Mitsubishi Vietnam is not abandoning the mid-size SUV segment. The company is set to launch a new 7-seater model, the Mitsubishi Destinator, in December.

Positioned as a successor to the Outlander, the Mitsubishi Destinator features a new platform, modern design, and advanced safety technology. It targets family buyers, the same demographic previously served by the Outlander.
