At its fourth iteration, the Green Economy Forum 2025 (GEF 2025), organized by EuroCham, brought together policymakers, business leaders, and sustainability experts to analyze policy shifts and market dynamics shaping Vietnam’s green growth trajectory. During the forum, Carlsberg Vietnam participated in the panel discussion titled “Challenges and Opportunities of DPPA for FDI Enterprises,” sharing insights and updates on the nation’s sustainable development priorities.
During the panel, Mr. Andrew Khan, Managing Director of Carlsberg Vietnam, provided practical perspectives on the DPPA mechanism—purchasing electricity from renewable sources. He also outlined how the company is preparing for the next steps as Vietnam accelerates its transition to clean energy.
Over Three Decades in Vietnam and a Steadfast Commitment to Sustainability
Carlsberg Vietnam has been an integral part of Vietnam’s economic landscape for over three decades. As one of the pioneering Danish enterprises investing in Vietnam, the company has consistently aligned its growth with local communities, embedding sustainability as a core pillar of its long-term strategy.
This commitment is vividly demonstrated at the Phu Bai Brewery, which completed its expansion phase in August 2025. Significant investments in modern equipment, advanced technology, and automation have enabled Carlsberg Vietnam to minimize environmental impact and optimize operational efficiency.
Currently, the Phu Bai Brewery operates on internationally certified I-REC renewable electricity, complemented by biomass energy. The new high-efficiency brewing line reduces water usage by 20% and energy consumption by 15%, while upgraded cooling systems further cut emissions. These advancements are pivotal in achieving Carlsberg Vietnam’s sustainability roadmap: zero waste to landfill by the end of 2025, 100% recyclable or reusable packaging and a water efficiency ratio of 2.0 hl/hl by 2026, and net-zero emissions in production by 2028.
DPPA – A Key Driver in the Net-Zero Emissions Journey
The DPPA discussion at GEF 2025 emphasized that Vietnam’s transition to renewable energy requires close collaboration among regulators, energy providers, and businesses. Mr. Andrew Khan affirmed that the DPPA mechanism is integral to Carlsberg Vietnam’s long-term sustainability commitments.
Across the Carlsberg Group, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are foundational in securing electricity from new renewable projects. Long-term PPAs in Europe and Asia underscore the Group’s pledge to source 100% of its electricity from newly built renewable sources by 2030, positioning Carlsberg as a global leader in the beer industry’s clean energy transition.

For Carlsberg Vietnam, DPPA is a natural extension of its global strategy. The company has been using I-REC-certified renewable electricity since 2022, but Mr. Andrew Khan notes this is just the beginning. To achieve net-zero emissions in production by 2028, Carlsberg Vietnam is scaling up its renewable energy share through DPPA participation and solar power investments, aligning with Vietnam’s Net Zero 2050 roadmap and the Group’s global goals.
Mr. Andrew Khan stated, “DPPA makes renewable energy use tangible and more impactful. It strengthens Vietnam’s clean energy infrastructure, supports long-term sustainability goals, and demonstrates our commitment to modernizing the electricity market and attracting high-quality green capital.”
Mr. Andrew emphasized that DPPA bolsters Vietnam’s clean energy transition while fostering innovation and knowledge exchange between Vietnam and Europe.
“Additionally, DPPA opens avenues for technology and expertise exchange between Vietnam and Europe. European businesses can bring innovations, technical know-how, and financial solutions to support Vietnam’s climate agenda. With global expertise and strong local commitment, Carlsberg Vietnam is poised to contribute actively to this sustainable transition.”
Sustainability Beyond Energy: Long-Term Community Commitment
Carlsberg Vietnam’s sustainability efforts extend deeply into community life, particularly in Central Vietnam, home to the Huda brand. Over seven years, the “Clean Water for a Loving Central Vietnam” program has provided clean water to nearly 40,000 residents. Additionally, the annual “Tet of Fullness, Tet of Love” initiative has supported over 75,000 people for a decade.
The company also stands with communities during challenging times. Following the recent historic floods in Central Vietnam, Carlsberg Vietnam swiftly provided 1.5 billion VND in emergency aid to households in Hue and Da Nang. Ahead of GEF 2025, the company contributed an additional 1,000 USD to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Fund, joining EuroCham members in supporting a “resilient Vietnam.”

These sustained efforts reflect Carlsberg Vietnam’s commitment to community engagement, from long-term programs to timely crisis support. This dedication was recognized at the EuroCham Business Impact Awards 2025 with the “Enterprise for the Community” award, reaffirming the company’s strong bond with the communities it serves.

A Trusted Partner in Vietnam’s Green Transition
As Vietnam accelerates its sustainable development agenda, Carlsberg Vietnam views its strategy as part of a long-term, responsible partnership with the nation. The company remains committed to tangible progress: enhancing environmental efficiency, optimizing operations, and sustaining community programs.
Through these efforts, Carlsberg Vietnam aims to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable Vietnam, true to its mission of “brewing for a better today and a brighter tomorrow.”
