Vietnam and Brunei Strengthen Strategic Partnership, Trade Surges Forward

During his meeting with General Secretary To Lam in Hanoi, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations. This comes amidst a remarkable 165% surge in bilateral trade and the expansion of collaborative efforts across multiple sectors.

On the afternoon of November 30th, at the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Headquarters, General Secretary To Lam received Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam during his state visit to Vietnam. This marks the Sultan’s seventh visit to Vietnam, occurring as the Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations enters a more substantive phase of development.

General Secretary To Lam warmly welcomed the Sultan’s return to Vietnam, commending Brunei’s socio-economic achievements, particularly its high growth and world-class social welfare standards. The Vietnamese leader expressed confidence in Brunei’s ability to achieve its “Vision 2035” goals. Sultan Bolkiah also extended condolences to families affected by recent floods and landslides in Vietnam.

Both leaders acknowledged the positive expansion of Vietnam-Brunei relations. High-level exchanges have been frequent, and cooperation in areas such as defense, security, fisheries, energy, and education has yielded significant results. Bilateral trade in 2024 surged by 165% compared to 2023, surpassing the $500 million target set for 2025 ahead of schedule.

Deepening Cooperation with New Directions

Discussing future directions, the leaders agreed to strengthen political trust, boost trade and investment, and enhance business connectivity. Vietnam and Brunei will further explore potential areas such as agriculture, fisheries, Halal products, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

General Secretary To Lam proposed increased maritime cooperation, particularly in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and addressing climate change. Sultan Bolkiah affirmed Vietnam’s importance as a key trade partner, expressing interest in expanding cooperation in energy, agriculture, and educational programs to foster greater people-to-people ties.

Both sides pledged continued mutual support in multilateral forums, especially within ASEAN and the United Nations, emphasizing ASEAN’s centrality and unity in the region. Vietnam and Brunei committed to ongoing collaboration on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the South China Sea.

During the meeting, Sultan Bolkiah extended a formal invitation to General Secretary To Lam to visit Brunei at a mutually convenient time, which the General Secretary gladly accepted.
