On the morning of December 1st, VTC News reported that the billion-dollar Cancer Hospital project in Can Tho City has resumed, marking a revival after years of abandonment.
The Can Tho Cancer Hospital project, approved with a capacity of 500 beds and a total investment of over 1.727 trillion VND, was funded 80.66% by an ODA loan from Hungary and 19.34% by local counterpart funds. Since July 2022, the project was halted due to the expiration of the loan agreement and the EPC general contract, leaving the construction unfinished for years.
On July 21, 2022, the Prime Minister issued a decision extending the project’s timeline to December 31, 2026. During the Can Tho City People’s Council’s specialized session on November 14, the resolution adjusting the investment policy for the project was approved.
The revised funding structure includes a 272 billion VND ODA loan from Hungary, 1.334 trillion VND from the central budget, and over 465 billion VND in local counterpart funds. The total investment was adjusted upward by approximately 344 billion VND due to exchange rate fluctuations, bringing the projected total to 2.071 trillion VND.
According to Pham Quang Dung, an official from the Bach Dang Construction Corporation’s Project Management Unit, the team has swiftly begun landscaping and cleaning the site after years of awaiting the project’s resumption.

On October 14, the Government Inspectorate concluded that the Cancer Hospital project had several limitations and shortcomings. Following this, Can Tho City authorities prioritized restarting the project, determined to prevent it from becoming a lingering issue for the public.
