My Dinh National Stadium, operational since 2003 for the 22nd SEA Games, has been the stage for countless glorious moments in Vietnamese football. From pivotal international matches to major sporting events, this venue holds a special place in the nation’s sporting history.
After over two decades of continuous use, the stadium has become an integral part of fans’ memories. However, prolonged operation has led to significant wear and tear. This deterioration, persisting for years, has become a pressing concern whenever My Dinh hosts major football events.
In early September 2025, My Dinh Stadium embarked on a major renovation project to address long-standing issues. This marks the most extensive upgrade since the 31st SEA Games in 2022.
The construction is scheduled to last over three months, during which all sporting, cultural, and entertainment activities will be suspended to facilitate the renovation work.
The comprehensive renovation project, with a total investment of approximately 10 billion VND from the state budget, is divided into two phases. Phase 1, costing around 8 billion VND, focuses on the foundation—the most critical aspect determining the pitch’s quality. The entire old soil layer will be excavated and replaced to ensure proper drainage, smoothness, and elasticity, meeting modern stadium standards. This phase is expected to complete by year-end.
Phase 2, with a budget of 2 billion VND, is dedicated to planting high-quality turf. The chosen grass type is Zeon Zoysia, the same variety used in world-renowned stadiums like Old Trafford (Manchester United) and Anfield (Liverpool).
If all goes according to plan, by February 2026, My Dinh Stadium will be covered with this new turf, promising a completely refreshed look for the national pitch.
Beyond the pitch, various other facilities within the stadium are being renovated to enhance safety, aesthetics, and the overall fan experience.
The last upgrade to My Dinh Stadium was in late 2021, in preparation for the 31st SEA Games. However, that renovation primarily focused on minor improvements without addressing the pitch’s foundation.
This comprehensive renovation carries significant expectations. Not only will it address long-standing deterioration, but it also aims to restore My Dinh Stadium to its rightful status as a national venue, capable of hosting international matches, major sporting events, and regional spectacles.
