VinFast Considers Gasoline Engines to Extend Electric Vehicle Range

VinFast, the Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, is exploring the integration of small gasoline engines into select electric models to enhance battery charging and extend driving range, according to Reuters. This strategic shift marks a partial departure from the company’s current all-electric vehicle focus.

VinFast, a Nasdaq-listed company, is strategizing to boost sales and expand its international market presence to mitigate ongoing losses.

According to three insiders, the company is considering the integration of small gasoline engines to enhance the range of its electric vehicles (EVs).

One source revealed that in November, a task force was assigned to explore the feasibility of converting the VF9 SUV into a Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) by incorporating a dedicated small gasoline engine for battery charging. Another source indicated that VinFast is also evaluating hybrid models. All emphasized that these plans remain in preliminary stages.

Evidence of this strategy surfaced in at least three job postings on LinkedIn in November, where VinFast sought experts in REEV technology.

When approached by Reuters for comment, Vingroup, which handles communications for VinFast, stated they would “not overlook opportunities to research and develop new products aligned with customer preferences, market demands, and industry trends.”

Currently, VinFast produces approximately 12 models, primarily compact urban vehicles, with domestic sales of around 104,000 units in the first nine months of the year, accounting for nearly 95% of its global sales. The VF9, the company’s most expensive model, represents only about 1% of sales in Vietnam and is exported in limited quantities to the U.S. and Canada.

REEV technology operates similarly to hybrid vehicles, utilizing both electric and internal combustion engines, but with the gasoline engine solely charging the battery to extend range rather than directly powering the vehicle.

VinFast ceased gasoline vehicle production in 2022, transitioning entirely to electric vehicles. In the same year, the company signed the COP26 declaration, committing to sell only zero-emission vehicles in key markets by 2035 and globally by 2040. While REEVs still emit pollutants, their emissions are typically lower than those of plug-in hybrids.

Reuters has not confirmed whether VinFast will develop REEV technology in-house or source it externally. Vingroup affirmed that there are “no changes to the overall strategy,” with official details to be announced “at the appropriate time.” VinFast holds nearly 80 patents as of 2023, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Interest in REEV technology extends beyond VinFast. Chinese EV manufacturers such as Li Auto and Leapmotor have already launched REEV models, while traditional automakers are also exploring similar technologies.

Amid Vietnam’s efforts to combat air pollution, the government has outlined plans to restrict gasoline-powered vehicles, starting with a ban on gasoline motorbikes in central Hanoi by mid-2026.
