Hot: VinFast Considers Adding Gasoline Engines to Extend Range for Electric Vehicles

VinFast is reportedly considering equipping some of its electric vehicle models with small gasoline engines, primarily to charge batteries and extend driving range, according to Reuters. This strategy mirrors approaches taken by international automakers, addressing infrastructure challenges and boosting sales in global markets.

According to sources close to the matter, as reported by Reuters on December 1st, Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is considering adjusting its “all-electric” strategy by exploring the development of Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs).

Specifically, the company is evaluating the integration of small gasoline engines in certain models, solely for charging the electric motor’s battery, to address consumer concerns about range anxiety.

The sources revealed that a research team was tasked in November with investigating the feasibility of converting the premium SUV VF9 to an REEV model.

If implemented, the new VF9 variant would still operate primarily on an electric motor but would include a gasoline engine to recharge the battery, enabling longer journeys without relying solely on charging stations. The sources emphasized that the plan remains in its early stages.

VinFast’s recent recruitment activities seem to corroborate this shift. Reuters noted that the company posted at least three job listings for REEV technology experts on LinkedIn in November. This interest in REEV technology indicates VinFast’s proactive approach to finding flexible solutions to boost sales and expand its presence in international markets, where charging infrastructure remains a significant challenge.

In response to these reports, a Vingroup representative stated that the company would not overlook any opportunities to research and develop new products that align with consumer preferences and market trends. However, the conglomerate stressed that its overall strategy remains unchanged, and official announcements will be made at the appropriate time.

This approach is gaining traction in the global automotive industry. In China, electric vehicle manufacturers like Li Auto and Leapmotor have already commercialized REEV models, achieving success by balancing electric driving experiences with convenience. Major traditional automakers worldwide are also exploring similar options to diversify their product portfolios and maintain market share during the technological transition.

In terms of business performance, VinFast delivered approximately 104,000 vehicles in the Vietnamese market during the first nine months of this year, accounting for nearly 95% of its global sales. The VF9, the model under consideration for the REEV study, currently represents about 1% of domestic sales and is being exported to demanding markets such as the U.S. and Canada.

Analysts suggest that if VinFast introduces REEVs to its lineup, it would be a pragmatic move. It would not only diversify customer options but also effectively address sales challenges amidst a slowing global electric vehicle market due to infrastructure limitations.

Previously, VinFast ceased gasoline vehicle production in 2022 and committed to selling 100% emission-free vehicles in key markets by 2035.
