On December 8th, the Phu Bai Ward Police (Hue City) reported successfully rescuing a victim of an online kidnapping scam.

Prior to this, the Phu Bai Ward Police received a report from N.T.H. (born in 2007, residing in Thai Nguyen Province). H. stated that they were contacted by individuals impersonating police officers and prosecutors, falsely accusing them of involvement in a fraud ring in Ho Chi Minh City. To gain trust, the scammers conducted a video call featuring someone wearing a police uniform, then instructed H. to join a Zoom Workspace meeting and refrain from informing anyone.

After the rescue, the Phu Bai Ward Police contacted the victim’s family in Thai Nguyen to bring them safely home.

Following the scammers’ instructions, H. transferred 500,000 VND and then 5,000,000 VND to the provided accounts. They were further instructed to purchase a new phone and SIM card to sever contact with their family. From December 1st, H. was directed to travel continuously from Thai Nguyen to Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Hue City, and other locations.

During this time, the scammers guided H. to access a Zalo application named “FE CREDIT Finance Company” to apply for an 18,000,000 VND loan, which they were then forced to transfer to another account.

On December 2nd, the scam group transferred 2,000,000 VND via MoMo wallet for H. to rent a hotel room and cover expenses, maintaining control. By 11 PM that day, H. arrived in Phu Bai Ward and checked into a guesthouse.

Sensing something was wrong, H. reported the situation to the Phu Bai Ward Police. Upon verification, authorities confirmed H. was a victim of an “online kidnapping” scheme, where scammers coerce victims into transferring money, purchasing new devices to cut off communication, and constantly moving to control and defraud them.

The Phu Bai Ward Police have since contacted H.’s family in Thai Nguyen to ensure their safe return home.
