The Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant project, a key national power source initiative, is entering its final stretch with remarkable speed, aiming to connect Unit 1 to the grid by December 19, 2025. With an overall progress of 97% and over 18 million safe labor hours, the project is on track to become one of EVN’s fastest, safest, and most synchronized coal-fired power plants in recent years.

According to the Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2), the first oil firing for Unit 1’s boiler was successfully completed in August, marking a pivotal milestone that officially transitions the project into the synchronized testing phase. Most critical auxiliary systems—including water treatment, compressed air, lubrication, and cooling—have been tested and stabilized.

The next critical phase, as noted by Mr. Do Thanh Tai, Director of EVNPMB2, involves pipeline blowing, chemical cleaning, and pressure testing. These essential technical steps ensure the removal of impurities and absolute technical safety for equipment before grid connection. These processes are being executed in parallel under the close supervision of the main contractor and international consultants.

Despite harsh weather conditions, including prolonged rain and intense heat, the team of engineers and workers on-site has demonstrated unwavering determination. At its peak, the workforce exceeded 4,000 people per day, and currently maintains around 3,000. Local contractors, notably Lilama 10 and Lilama 18, have taken on the bulk of mechanical and installation work, underscoring the leading role of Vietnamese enterprises.

Mr. Pham The Thao, Site Commander of Lilama 18, shared that over 88% of the construction volume has been completed, equivalent to nearly 68,000 tons of equipment. To meet deadlines, teams have worked in continuous shifts, with on-site accommodations arranged to overcome challenges posed by weather, terrain, and material supply inconsistencies.

Ultra-Supercritical (USC) Technology

Quang Trach I represents a technological leap for Vietnam’s thermal power sector by adopting the most advanced Ultra-Supercritical (USC) technology available today.

High Efficiency: The boiler operates under extremely high pressure and temperature, enhancing energy conversion efficiency and reducing coal consumption to approximately 280g/kWh.

Environmentally Friendly: USC technology significantly reduces emissions of CO₂, SOx, and NOx. The plant is equipped with state-of-the-art environmental treatment systems:

FGD Desulfurization System (using seawater instead of traditional limestone).

NOx Emission Reduction System.

High-Efficiency ESP Electrostatic Precipitator.

CEMS Automated Emission Monitoring System.

Emissions meet stringent environmental standards before exiting the chimney, aligning with global benchmarks. Notably, the plant’s design allows for future fuel conversion to biomass or ammonia, supporting Vietnam’s Net Zero 2050 roadmap.

With a total capacity of 1,403 MW (2 units) and an investment of over 41 trillion VND, Quang Trach I is expected to generate approximately 9-10 billion kWh annually.

Once operational, the project will provide critical baseline power, balancing the national grid, particularly in the Central region, where capacity shortages are significant. It will also reduce strain on the North-Central transmission system.

Aiming to connect Unit 1 by December 19, 2025, and commence commercial operation in May 2026, Quang Trach I demonstrates exceptional commitment and capability, excelling in both timeline and technological quality.
